Microsoft Windows 11

I have a screen that tells me my OS is missing or damaged. Can I download one to my phone and plug my phone into my laptop and recover it that way?

Hi @SuprDave73,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Recovering the OS on your Chromebook 11 when you see a message indicating the OS is missing or damaged is a straightforward process, but it typically requires the use of a separate computer rather than a phone. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

What You'll Need:

  1. A USB flash drive with at least 4GB of space.
  2. A separate computer with internet access (Windows, Mac, or Linux).

Steps to Recover Your Chromebook OS:

Prepare the Recovery Media:

  • On a separate computer, open the Chrome browser and go to the Chromebook Recovery Utility in the Chrome Web Store.
  • Add the extension to Chrome by clicking "Add to Chrome" and then "Add extension."
  • Once added, open the Chromebook Recovery Utility from the Chrome apps menu.

Create the Recovery Drive:

  • Launch the Chromebook Recovery Utility and click "Get Started."
  • Enter your Chromebook model number. If you don’t know it, you can usually find it on the screen that says your OS is missing or damaged.
  • Insert your USB flash drive into the computer and follow the prompts to create the recovery drive. This will download the OS and write it to the USB drive.

Recover Your Chromebook:

  • Once the recovery drive is ready, remove it from the computer.
  • Turn off your Chromebook.
  • Insert the USB flash drive into the Chromebook.
  • Press and hold the Esc + Refresh keys, then press the Power button. Release the Power button when the Chromebook starts up, but continue to hold the Esc + Refresh keys until you see a screen that says "Chrome OS is missing or damaged."
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the recovery process. This will involve erasing the existing data on your Chromebook and reinstalling the OS from the USB drive.

Complete the Recovery:

  • Once the OS installation is complete, remove the USB flash drive.
  • Your Chromebook should restart and prompt you to set it up as if it were new.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
