I've seen most recovery failures are due to hard disk corruption.  Try cloning to a known good drive.

I had the same problem with my Envy / Windows 7 . Was told by HP (after several calls) The problem is using System Recover inside of Windows. Was instructed:

Enter Recovery Restoration software **outside** of windows.

turnon the laptop with the power button while tapping the ESC key.

From this screen choose the system restore option and proceed as normal from the HP System Restore software main menu.

I got the same error as when using inside Windows. Support was worst than useless.

I had great luck with my last HP Compaq laptop. Bought this Evvy and it's been a NIGHTMARE especially the HP techs, the American techs are the WORST! Never will I buy HP again!

I'm in the same boat, and have been there for the past several days now.

Based on different suggestions I've seen-

Set the BIOS to 2012.

Enabled Legacy devices.

Disabled SecureBoot.

Tried not including the Supplemental DVD as part of the recovery.

None of it's made any difference. I can't get into Windows so I can't make any of the "if Windows is working" changes. The one thing I haven't done is made sure wi-fi is turned on because during Recovery there doesn't seem to be any way to turn it on.

I'm going to a convention in two days  and it would have been nice to have a working laptop. I've never had a computer give me this much difficulty before, and I don't intend to buy HP in the future as a result of this.

I seem to have gotten my laptop up and running, though I'm not sure what specifically fixed it. I'll mention everything I remember doing here in the event that it can help someone else.

1) The workaround for the boot image authentication message (if you get that one) is to turn SecureBoot off and Enable Legacy Devices.

2) Following another tip I found here, after resetting the BIOS to default values I switched USB3 to Auto rather than Enabled.

3) Perhaps most importantly, you need to reset the BIOS date to 2/1/2012 TWICE, at least you do if using the recovery DVDs. I switched it before using the DVDs, but in the process of using them the date will be changed. After going through the DVDs the laptop will do a countdown to another restart. Let the laptop restart, but go into the BIOS -again- and change the date back to 2/1/2012.

Point 3 in particular was something I hadn't done before...I didn't realize that the recovery DVDs were changing the BIOS date.

Same issue...

I've tried it all ways discussed- except by turning ON wifi. There is NO way to turn it on.

As Siphedious suggested,I just finished my most recent install, with the addition of going into the bios TWICE and checking the date. Date stayed the same, but still got the error message "The recovery attempt has failed. Please select one of the following buttons"

I have replaced my original drive with a new due to a drive failure.

My restore disks are DVDs from HP.

I set my bios to AUTO on USB 3.0 which got me further...

There is NO 'X' to click to close

Factory restored my bios

I ran gparted live and deleted all pertitions on the new drive

Anyone have ANY ideas of what could be going wrong? After the install fails, the options are "Datails", "Retry", or "Save log"- It will NOT save the log UNLESS I use a USB drive. It just tells me there is no more drive space...

UPDATE. HP is horrible in every way, I'm sure there are good people in the company but no good company in the business.

My new Envy has been back to the factory twice. After hours of lies and being hung up on from the phone, eventually the unit was returned to factory for a new hard disk drive. Still the computer would not do a restore under any circumstances. After even more frustrationn on the phone, the unit was sent back to factory.

Houston tech explained that the solid state hard drive MUST be removed from the unit before a system restore is possible. Oh great, Windows is on the SSD. **bleep**?

I don't believe HP but the system was re-loaded without bloatware as I requested and the unit seems to work fine now. I think NSA and HP collution is what is causing all the problems and cloak and dager s**t with customer service.

The SSD looks easy enough to remove, but does that have an effect on the speed?

I've got nothing better to do so I'll try to remove the drive and install that way.

In the mean time, still looking for answers. ...

For better or worse, the way things ultimately played out for me is that while setting the BIOS to 2/1/12 would let me complete recovery, my laptop would fail again within 1-2 days. One time I got it as far as patching to Win 8.1 shut the laptop off, turned it on the next day and it failed again.

In the end I was able to get an RMA by emailing the HP people (I was amazed and relieved to never have to pick up the phone), and I have to say they were pretty good to me, though I should note I was within warranty. Didn't cost me anything other than some time without the machine, and they did 2-day shipping for the entire process.

I'm happy to be able to report that my laptop hasn't given me a single error since I got it back.

Very sorry for everyone who's still having problems.

Great, be sure and let me know what is your experience either way, just in case I have to try this outside of warranty later.
