The latest MS update caused an endless Keyboard layout/ blue screen loop. Backup process prompts don't recognize external storage device. Rep suggested factory reset, but I'm afraid of deleting my files. Laptop is 6 years old, so toast? Worth resurrecting?

Hello @CJH2022
Sorry to hear that you are having problems ... I would like to help you.
(1) Short roadmap - To keep all your data please disconnect and remove your hard drive. - Install new SSD hard drive, i.e. <SAMSUNG 870 EVO SATA SSD 500GB 2.5” Internal Solid State Hard Drive>. - Install Windows operating system using HP Cloud Recovery or Microsoft Official Setup. - Access your data with SATA-to-USB adapter.
Ask a friend/neighbor/acquaintance who is good in computers to help you. |
(2) The HP Notebook 15-ac163nr Product Specifications says there is:
Hard drive | 750 GB 5400 rpm SATA |
(3) To disconnect and remove hard drive follow:
