HP ENVY x360 - 15-cn0019tx

IMG_4280.jpeg

hi. I was given this last message before I got to the OOBE where I said “I don’t have internet” so I could skip login… now I am in windows and I want to make sure I finish these last three steps. I know how to get the windows security updates without upgrading to win 11 accidentally. Are HP security updates referring to the free McAfee product? I have a usb with all of the latest drivers, how many can I install and can I install the latest nvidea drivers, or just the latest listed on the HP driver page?

thanks

edit: why is Intel Pinning explorer extension installed with my device if it only supports optane ssd over 32gB and mine is 16gB?

Hi @YeahTheBoys,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Let's address your questions step by step.

Windows Security Updates and Upgrading to Windows 11:

Windows Security Updates: Yes, HP security updates may include updates for McAfee, especially if it came pre-installed on your HP ENVY laptop. However, it's essential to keep all aspects of your system updated, including Windows Defender if you choose not to use third-party antivirus software.

Upgrading to Windows 11: To avoid accidentally upgrading to Windows 11, you can go to Windows Update settings and make sure that you have selected the option to receive updates for the current version of Windows and not for Windows 11.

Installing Drivers from USB:

  • You can generally install drivers from your USB for your HP ENVY laptop. It's recommended to start with essential drivers like chipset, graphics, network, and audio. Install the latest versions available on your USB, and if needed, you can update them later through the HP support website.

NVIDIA Graphics Drivers:

  • It's generally a good idea to use the drivers provided by HP for your laptop's graphics card. These drivers are often customized to work optimally with your specific hardware. You can check the HP support page for your laptop model to find the recommended NVIDIA drivers. However, if you have a specific need for the latest NVIDIA drivers, you can visit the official NVIDIA website.

Intel Pinning Explorer Extension:

  • The Intel Pinning Explorer Extension is related to Intel's Optane Memory technology. It may be pre-installed on your system even if you don't have an Optane SSD, as some systems come with certain Intel software components by default. If your laptop has an Optane SSD, it's designed to work seamlessly with it, but it doesn't necessarily mean it won't be present on systems without it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

TLDR: I fixed my issue by replacing the laptop fan. It throttles CPU utilisation even when the temperatures are low.

Maybe I should start a new discussion.
the latest of one driver is for the 7th gen intel processor and supports win 1903, the problem is that my cpu is the 8th gen (I believe) as it is an 8550U. The other support driver without a specific CPU is the win ver 1807, which is outdated…

does this mean I have to downgrade?

my model 15-cn0019TX there are four4 driver pages:

cn0019tx“win 10 1903” has the same (count#) driver download content available as the “cn0000” page eg same latest intel WHL DP thermal client driver.

the win 10 not 1903 has more drivers available such as the intel chipset installation utility 1909 revE for win 10 1909.

so the 15-cn 0000 and 15-cn0019tx are the same I think (at least for driver count: Driver chipset = 34 for win 10 and Driver chipset = 26 for win 10 1903.

my laptop is win 10 1903 so if we exclude the “win 10” (non 1903 pages with eg (i.e) 34 of the driver chipsets available) versions of the driver pages with available drivers for models 15-cn0000 and 15-cn0019tx, then we are left with something unusual which is a driver for both laptop models called “intel management engine interface (mei) driver - kaby lake (win 10 v1903)… I don’t have a kaby lake cpu (gen 7) I have gen 8 coffee lake 8550U which doesn’t seem to be compatible otherwise it wouldn’t be listed as ‘kaby lake’.
not having a driver available for my gen 8 cpu on win 1903 might be why I experience bad performance which I beg for help with.
(I didn’t have a problem 2ish years ago around win 11 or bios F3xx.)

but since then I have lost all interest in using my product until recently when a few expensive video games became cheap, so I try again to fix the issue which is:

every 5 minutes exactly my cpu utilisation is appliable for 10 seconds exactly, between 10 seconds the cpu is bad I.e it doesn’t apply itself to rasterisation.

Here is an example: fallout 4, a 3d application has 10 seconds after every 5 minutes where it performs (I assume) according to both products specifications I.e I get lots of frames per second. My CPU stays at around 49°c due to an internal cooler fan 😎. Yes I have looked into thermal and other software limitations but since I didn’t have this problem before 2ish years ago: I know it’s not a hardware issue (unless I have damaged my product coincidentally at the same time as win 11 and bios updates).
so I did a usb cloud recovery and haven’t installed any internal drivers including graphics which nvidea after 20-restarts-of-windows has alerted me of a new driver…

Edit: I am NOT going to do the following:

I am going to use DDU 18.0.6.9 by Wagnardsoft to uninstall display drivers and restart of then install latest version of both igpu and external gpu drivers from the cn0019tx (not cn0000) HP driver page and then continue this article.

…Because there are two drivers listed on the driver download page for my laptop I.e the later v1903 RevC kaby lake driver and the v1903 revB “HD (non-kaby lake)” driver: since I have a gen 8 cpu, I don’t know what to do. Do I have a gen 8 or 7 cpu???? It’s an 8550 and the physical sticker says i7 gen 8 but the HP driver page says my latest driver is a Kaby lake one 0.o

So currently I AM DOING exactly what I said I wasn’t going to do ie uninstall gpu(s) with DDU because: I found out where safe mode was hidden. The program in my SD card won’t load because there are no SD card drivers available in safe mode (let me try again).

TLDR for following: I installed 1809 NVIDIA graphics driver on my 1903 windows simply because the 1903 version states “Kaby lake” other wise known as gen 7 - in the title.  Currently my driver Nvidia is 25.21.14.1735 but I will replace with 24.21.13.9907

(

the cn0019tx pages show: 6 GPU drivers for win 10 1903 and 10 Gpu drivers for win 10: (very concerning naming strategy) both of the top two listed are the same: #1 NVIDEA kaby lake 1903 revC and #2 intel HD win 10 v1903, so I will pick the #2 driver from the 1903v of windows 10 since I don’t have a gen 7 cpu.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WILL SHOCK YOU.

there is also no nvidea driver listed on this page for versions of windows later than 1809, so I guess I should uninstall my nvidea driver or downgrade windows to v 1809 and maybe that will fix it.

)

“Hi”

*booting mainframe*

“my name is Cortana^(TM), would you like to send us usage statistics and slow down your PC?”

I still don’t know what version of MEI Intel works

the select safe mode start up mouse sensitivity is so slow I wish I had low enough pride to bend over and plug my built-in-memory-adjustable-dpi-mouse, but I’d rather just put up with it hopefully one last time, and plus I’m on a journalism-mojo-roll here.

>safe mode

>DDU : Clean and restart

>program seems frozen

>I click “clean and restart” one more time just to be sure even though the GUI “box” doesn’t highlight

>a minute later windows restarts out of safe mode

>I give it time to load in since CPU is probably limited at .39GHz

>I check task manager, yes: .39GHz.
>power options: I change my custom plan 1 to “Balanced (recomended)”, even though HP Recomended is listed under “hide additional plans” (probably due to quickCPU by Coderbag)

>Balanced is set to “best performance” in the task bar icon but performance is stil .39GHz

>Windows mobility centre: I change power plan to “high performance” but task manager shows .39GHz

>in a fit of rage I install SP96464

>okay I’m waiting for the installer to pop up because remember only .39GHz

>I don’t change install directory even though I really want to, I am afraid I might corrupt my system

>

stay tuned for what happens after I install the 1807 driver and if that doesn’t fix it I will change the INTEL MEI and Nvidia graphics to different ones. (This hasn’t been in safe mode since DDU)

Chapter 2: the drivers are in the gates

i restarted windows before installing nvidia 1809v drivers after the intel ones. I should probably be in safe mode.
>why doesn’t my $150AUD Corsair wired keyboard support BIOS input?
>gives windows a minute to finish its desktop loading apps phase

>realises I’m talking in 3rd person

installs nvidia 1809v graphics version stated in previous reply. (ver xxx….9907)

*reading license agreement*

im installing it in its default location even though I don’t want a folder of drivers in my root Dir.

>swigs scotch

>CMD is doing its thing I.e “setup -s -n”

>*still at .39GHz remember* I will take this moment to apologise for the passive shy nature of this post and for how long it is. Also my cats started meowing so idk if I should feed it: BRB.

Chapter 2: part 2 launching a game with new graphics drivers (or old depending on how you think of it)

i launch fallout 4 and I get “your graphics hardware could not be detected” ( I also get a steam error that is fixed when I launch in windowed mode for the first launch)

>turned out cat wanted a full bowl of food not half a bowl (am I spelling bowl right? Boul ball boll?)

game launching now

P.S. my game settings list SSAO instead of SSAO and ‘the-other-one’

vhapter two part 3

keep getting the same game error I did on the previous version except the last fix isn’t working here. And Steam cloud keeps turning back on as it used too also.

>I use throttle stop to in throttle my CPU and it fixes the game error (I hope) NO DIDNT WORK…

…> nvidia control panel not shown in task bar nor is hardware shown in device manager. I will restart windows (I should delete Temp)

>*.39GHz*
>still no nvidia control panel: I am installing the driver again now (no uninstall). SP 92776 11/16/2018 v 24.21.13.9907

>I already read the license agreement but I’m not sure if I’m meant to read it again because it does want me to, I’m not going to this time though.
>extracting files *I farted and it smells amazing*
>CMD : SP92776\WIN32UX>setup -s -n

(>my IEM fell out my ear but the triple flanged silicone is still inside.)

(>I invented this new notation for when you shouldn’t read this if it is a “>” after a “(“.  CMD just closed.

> didn’t notice any graphics driver switching-interrupts after CMD closed or during
okay sorry I’ll be serious

nvidia display adapter not showing, only UHD 620

im going to uninstall again (DDU) (no safe mode) and use a newer driver for NVIDIA MX150 GPU (even though this is a CPU issue I think)

(>I learnt from last time I don’t need to double click “clean and restart” in DDU.) (sorry)

“SetupAPI remove complete, Starting registry cleanup”

>when changing the last sentence, my iPhone highlighted and deleted the whole word “Setup” when I went to add a ””” quotation mark before it.
>booting back into desktop (.39GHz)

installing 546.29-notebook-win10-win11-64bit-international-(I take a break here to recover as my phone autocorrected “dch” to school and then again just now to dog”)dch-whql

>extracting to default location because I don’t want to corrupt my device.
(>my IEM ear tip keeps falling off and and just remember a really weird dream I had I think I got chances by a gorilla but it was in a movie so I think it was okay)

>drivers booting up

>compatibility check

>I have to check if it’s spelt compatibility or compat-a-bility (bit outdated) (I had to correct iPhones autocorrect from bit to but and I just had to do it again but it failed to correct when I wrote “tk” instead of “to” and just then it automatically changed “tk” to “to” when I put the last quotation mark.
>custom advance > clean instalation

>allow Mcafee firewall to allow Nvidia installapplication to access the internet this one time.
>im going to back up this journal while I wait.

(>Ugh my brother came home and I can hear my mum and him talking though my IEMs and construction head noise cancelling passive things).

>really hard to copy text on iPhone because it tries to copy the whole page instead of scrolling up

ugh I give up I’ll do it later

I just have to accept my ear tips will never fit this pair of IEMs after putting them on te bigger pair. I tear the cable tangled in my head out in rage and then again as it falls back off as I try to put it back in. That’s enough I’m getting new ear tips out the bag! (Still installing driver)

(>it’s been atleast 10minutes and the install bar has move not 1/3 the way. Maybe 25 minutes. I can’t find my ear tips even though I swear they were right here. Iv spent so long without my IEMs in and protective headphones … I blocked adapter change in mcafee fire wall (oops?) Nvidia container do I allow or block? I’m going to block it.

… I’m probably going to get hearing damage from my laptop fan.
ngx updater I will allow once in mcafee firewall.

im going to reboot my “notebook” (it’s just a laptop)

Chapter 2 part 4

HP battery alert

system cooling alert (bloated battery after 2 years where is my product recall????)

>I spelt alert with one too many “l”s so I fixed it

>signing in *welcome* (taking forever)

>fixing previous sentencing from chronologicalisation (I invented a new word give me a nobel peace price) why is peace and pice spelt differently I only just noticed…

>we have nvidia control panel in icons list and device is listed too in device manager!

fallout 4: “your video hardware was not identified” autocorrect sucks as it failed three obvious words in this sentence (I had to go back, luckily I haven’t made a new mistake (that hasn’t been autocorrect) so far in this post subscription)

>Booting Fallout in windowed mode.
>steam checking for updates even though I blocked it from the internet (yes fallout is up to date and so is steam).
“unable to sync game files” no duh. I don’t want it to anyway as I have stated in the settings multiple times.
Application load error (I fixed it before so I should again)

(maybe it just needs internet access)

>allowing… there are two versions of fallout 4 in the mcafee firewall and fallout 4 launcher and the window can’t be expanded to see the file names. Also the scroll bar is too skinny I always miss it with these caffeinated hands.

>I wow both of them (allow, cba correcting that “wow” to “allow” ACTUALLY I they are both set to designated ports with netgaurd so I will just slow the launcher and allow steam to access the internet 😞 😞 😠

>exiting steam

>opening steam as admin (.38Ghz)

>putting on hearing protection (my extractor fan for the laptop is super loud).
>closing steam promotion (even though it had an error displayed)

>cancelling steam download

>allowing steam common Redist to download 288mB (can’t blame me I have run the downloader with internet multiple times and checked c++ and DXdiag since then (v3.5, 4.8 not supported or windows update and v8 installed, I turned of windows update corrects form miss clicked letters angrily ut have c++ 2018 and prior and dx12.  Windows 1903 18362.30 is my current and hasn’t been updated since cloud recovery, maybe you can direct me to knowledge base catalogue if you want me to change it.
>just realised my download was throttling but I swear it’s still taking longer than usual. Oh it just jumped from 49mB to 175 of 289.5mB
>okaaay
where was I?

installing steam redist.
(:verifying first, actually)

(I should probably restart steam or windows)

>booting fallout windowed bordered.

sorry for sh!t posting

steam error application load S:0000065432 (same as last time but can’t fix this time idk maybe I should dedicate more wam (joking)).
>changing stean to steam in above sentence

dont know what to do anymore except change power plan and unpack cpu. Just got same error. I will try rebooting windows since it has been a whole hour since last time.

>now I have allowed steam internet access for no reason.
>acknowledging HP battery allert and cooling fan not installed properly alert. (I spelt alert wrong again).
>correcting HO to “HP” in last sentence

>tapping foot, it feels tingly.

>welcomeing (no way I spelt welcoming wrong).
>.39GhZ

>starting throttlestop (don’t make me tell you the story about darth plageouse the wjse)

this is all in an effort to bench mark the CPU even though I personally know it won’t work.
I still don’t have the MEI intel for my version of windows or gen of cpu and I think there’s a possibility that’s not even the problem because the website package installer detected my drivers and stated they were up to date for win 10 1903 but I didn’t try the “win 10” detector.
>BD PROCHOT turned off so no more .39GhZ.
>opening steam > fallout is booting in 400x700

>exiting steam promotion pausing game update

> opening steam I mean FO4 with mostly low settings and 1700xwhatever resolution. IT WORKED THE GAME DIDNT GIVE ME THE ERROR 000065432

benchmarking now

I don’t think it’s fixed but I am going to quickly kill these murilerks and then go back to my last save because I wasted lots of ammo benchmarking. Also it didn’t fix it. I get slightly better fps but I did boot with faster settings and I don’t have an FPs counter on.

there was about 10 seconds of high silky smooth gameplay and then it went all 30Fps and input delay on me. I will check the five minutes gap is still a thing and then look at the other drivers.

HP Recommended

that was a close one. We both almost died and with my last mag left on my second and last gun, we finished them, about 5 soft shells - off.
the good thing about the 5 minutes off 1@ seconds in, is that it’s helped me see the game in a new light, since I played last 5 years ago, I no longer have running toggled on constantly, and I spend more time preparing attacks knowing that i have all but 10 seconds to take out the ghouls or whatever… okay five minutes is coming up

yep okay it was exactly five minutes

and I assume 10 seconds of smooth gameplay but my stopwatch only got to 7 (I think I clicked late or IOS is messing with me, (yes I have the latest iOS installed).

so this is going to be my last reply for a while as I install all the driver and then potentially start a new thread before downgrading to win 10 1809 or finding the right drivers which aren’t listed on the page, or maybe I didn’t use safe mode enough today or restart my pc enough times between drivers?

this has been ridiculous

HP Recommended

Quick clarifications before I start the day

j think I stated win 10 v 1807 instead of 1809.
Ii said I was reinstalling intel graphics and then ended up forgetting and only installing nvidia? Uhhhhh let me check.
Maybe this is all because of my bloated battery that my driver decides to throttle everything, even on AC. ( I also noticed if I game with the laptop battery REMOVED, the laptop with shut down during heavy gameplay 40+watts cpu draw (of course this hasn’t been the issue for the past few years).

maybe I could try gaming in safe mode.
Anyone want me to show them my Throttle Stop TPL settings? The PL0 is just the frequency modifier right? See I’m not a total idiot.
