HP Notebook 15-ba037cl
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I installed a new hard drive.   Quick system check recognized it.   I ordered the recovery media from HP on USB and have tried unsuccessfully to install the OS.  I receive this error while copying files.   COPY FILE FAILS from D:/PRELOAD\BASE.SWM

to: Z:\RM\IMAAGE\BASE.SWM

Hi:

I wouldn't be able to help you with why the HP recovery media doesn't work (sometimes it just doesn'), but you can usually clean install W10 as follows...

You can make a W10 USB flash drive installer with the Microsoft Media Creation Tool, using an 8 GB flash drive using another Windows PC, if your PC is not working.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, select the 'I don't have a product key' option, and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

Here are the steps to create the W10 USB flash drive installer...

Select Download tool now, and select Run.

If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.

On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.

Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows 10. You want 64 bit.

Select which media you want to use:

USB flash drive. Plug in a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.

Then you can reinstall the drivers and available software from the PC's support page.

If you are happy with the results, you can call Hp and see if you can get a refund for the recovery media you bought.

Thanks Paul but I did that 2 wks ago again it wouldn't load.  I then decided to order the  recovery USB directly from HP.

You're very welcome.

What prevented the plain W10 installation media from working?

What error codes if any did you get?

Usually that works with no issues.

If the USB flash drive method doesn't work, and your PC has a DVD drive, download the ISO file instead and burn it to a DVD.

The error I received when I used thenote Win10 I made from Creation Tool was: Windows can't be installed on drive 0 partition 1.  Thought it showed Drive 0 Unallocated space was fine.  It said I needed more space.  I deleted all the other partitions.  I am at a loss as to why nothing is working the way it should be.  I've done this before on laptops and desktops and had no issues.

I tried it and received the same error that there was not enough space.   I believe the new hard drive I installed has failed.  I am in the process of returning it and hopefully it will be the answer to the issues.  Otherwise, I will need to find out why the hard drives are failing after one day.

Figured out the new hard drive failed.  Re ordered a hard drive, installed it and then proceeded to install Windows 10 from the USB that HP provided for my laptop.  Everything was going in smoothly and then received an message saying it could not finish the install.  I do get an error 80004001 now.   It now just goes to PC repair or Shutdown.  I'm not sure what went wrong with the installation.  Help?

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with any issues regarding the HP supplied recovery media.

Try the approach I suggested the other day.

At least that way you will have a usable notebook.
