Yes, the new hard drive you get would be a standard 2.5" 7mm or 9.5 mm thick, SATA II or III notebook hard drive.
If you decide to get the recovery disks, you need to purchase a hard drive at least as large in storage capacity) as the one that came with your notebook.
Recovery disks have all of the drivers and software already included.
If you install a plain copy of W7, you would get the drivers and available software for download at the link below.

The notebook came from HP with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).
If you can still read all 25 characters of the W7 product key on the Microsoft COA sticker on the PC's case, you can download the W7 Home Premium 64 bit ISO file from the link below, and then use the ISO to dvd or usb flash drive tool at the link below this one, that will make the ISO file bootable. Use the product key to activate the installation.
