I recently bought this HP laptop for my 96-year-old father. He just wants to check his email his Facebook and his bank account. Thinking that I might inherit this laptop when he passes, I put it in my name. and now when I turn the computer on, it is asking for a pin and there’s no way I can access anything on this computer for him. And I don’t seem to be able to change my name to his with his proper phone number. Help how do I undo the damage that I’ve already done.

Hi @KJessen

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating this must feel, especially since you set the laptop up with the best of intentions.

Let’s carefully walk through how you can make this computer truly usable for your father, while undoing the setup that’s locking you out.

Step 1: Sign in with the current account

  • When the laptop asks for a PIN, look for the option “Sign-in options” just below the PIN box.
  • Choose “Password” and enter the Microsoft account password you used when registering the laptop.
(If you don’t remember it, use “Forgot password” and follow the prompts to reset.)

Step 2: Create a new local account for your father

  1. Once signed in, press the Windows key and select Settings.
  2. Go to Accounts > Family & other users.
  3. Under “Other users,” select Add account.
  4. Choose I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, then Add a user without a Microsoft account.
  5. Enter your father’s name and a simple password he can remember.
This creates a local account that doesn’t require email or phone verification.

Step 3: Make his account the main one

  • After creating the account, select it under “Other users” and choose Change account type.
  • Set it to Administrator so he has full control.
  • Restart the laptop and sign in with his new account. This way, he’ll see his name and won’t be asked for your PIN.

Step 4: Remove or adjust your account

  • Back in Settings > Accounts > Family & other users, select your account and choose Remove if you want the laptop to be only his.
  • If you’d prefer to keep your account for later, simply leave it there but make his account the one he uses daily.

Step 5: Set up his essentials

  • Open the browser and sign him into his email, Facebook, and bank account.
  • Save those logins so he doesn’t need to type them every time.
  • You can also pin these sites to the taskbar or Start menu for one-click access.

This way, the laptop will greet him with his name, his password, and his apps ready to go. You’ve already taken the first step by recognizing what needs fixing, and with these adjustments, he’ll have a smooth, simple experience.
