hp x2 detachable 10-n100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

On an hp x2 detachable 10-n100, the windows recovery USB drive does not work i.e it not possible to restore windows 10 nor reset windows 10 to an working order - every time the process ends up with an error message.

However it is possible to boot from the recovery USB drive into windows recovery environment; in particular it is possible to use the command prompt.

Following several pieces of advice, a full install of windows 10 via a bootable USB drive containing windows 10 x64 ISO - made with Rufus - has been attempted.

However upon installing windows 10 with the said bootable USB drive, it is impossible to delete the old partitions on the C: drive.

After using Diskpart in command prompt and the order Clean the C: drive several times without success : the installation of windows 10 always ends with an error message : "windows 10 windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation" - probably due to the undeleted partitions.

So the questions are : 1/ how come it's not possible to delete the old partitions by using Diskpart ? After having run the order Clean the old partitions seem to have gone but then reappear by the time of reinstalling windows. 2/ What are the options to reinstall windows 10 on the machine now that neither the windows recovery USB drive nor a bootable windows 10 ISO USB drive can.

The hard drive (32gb eMMC) has passed the hardware testing both quick and extensive, and seems to be in a working order (being labelled healthy by Diskpart) .

Thank you for your help,

Cheers

As you mentioned you have issues restoring your PC back to factory settings using the USB recovery kit.

I appriciate your efforts for trying out the steps before reaching out to us.

Since you have replaced the SATA hard drive to SSD on your laptop try restoring the BIOS to default and check if it helps.

1.    Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2.    Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3.    On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4.    Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5.    Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
6.    Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Also, try the steps recommended below.

  1. Connect a USB drive to the computer.

       CAUTION:

Everything on the drive is deleted when you create the recovery drive.

       NOTE:

Copying the recovery partition uses more than 16 GB of space and requires a large capacity USB drive.

  2. In Windows, type create a recovery drive into Search, and then select Create a recovery drive from the search results.

  3. Select Back up system files to the recovery drive if you want to copy the recovery partition to the USB drive. Copying the recovery partition uses more than 16 GB of space and requires a large capacity USB drive.

Try changing the boot options in BIOS and make SSD/SATA to the top of the list save changes in BIOS.

If the issue persists try changing the boot options from legacy to secure boot in BIOS press F10 to save changes and exit.

Try running a hardware diagnostics on your PC and let me know the results.

Refer this article to know how to run system diagnostics test on your PC.

Also, if you are using self-created recovery kit, the recovery kit might have gone faulty or the recovery process has not completed successfully.

So please contact HP and order a set of recovery kit and check if it helps.
