I use HPSA, latest version, an update is repeatedly offered and installed. I cannot check whether the installation was successful or not

It is likely just an error in HPSA.
Not that uncommon, in fact.
Uninstall HPSA from Settings > Apps > Apps and Features
Restart the computer and log in
"Get" and install a new copy of the HP Support Assistant from the HPSA website.
Updated?
Open Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager > Network Adapters
Right Click on Adapter > Properties > Tab Driver

You are welcome.
Sure - could be the case.
Yes, HPSA does a good job but it does exhibit issues on occasion.
For those reading:
HPSA is not mandatory - and it can also be set to not automatically run updates.
The latest version of the HPSA Application can be adjusted to ignore all or at least some categories of Automatic updates.
What?
Switch off Software Updates Settings and then run the HPSA on your own scheduled and on your own terms.
If you have not done so,
If you want to continue to use HPSA but wish to control its behavior,
Open HP Support Assistant
Click Settings (wheel)
Optional >> Click Software Updates Settings OFF
(Done - Click Home key in left column to close Settings)
OR
If Software Updates Settings are set ON
then
Click to open Software Updates Settings drop-down menu
Note >> All Critical Updates will be installed (no choice)
Recommended >> Uncheck BIOS
Uncheck / Check other categories as wanted
(Done - Click Home key in left column to close Settings)
Example - HP Support Assistant Application > Settings for Automatic Updates
HPSA_App_Settings_Auto-Updates_1
