Title: Request for Help – BIOS Persistence Active Issue on HP ProBook 440 G8 (i5 11th Gen

Body:

Hello HP Community,

I am using an HP ProBook 440 G8 (i5 11th Gen) with Windows [your version, e.g., Windows 10 Pro 64-bit or Windows 11 Pro].

After a recent Windows Update, my laptop started showing the message “BIOS Persistence Active” during boot.

I have already tried the following:

Flashed SPI ROM

Performed full BIOS reset

Reinstalled/changed Windows OS

Unfortunately, the issue is still present.

My questions are:

1. What exactly does “BIOS Persistence Active” mean on this device?

2. Is there any firmware update or unlocked BIOS firmware available that could fix or bypass this issue?

3. If not, what is the recommended solution from HP engineers or advanced users?

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or support.

Thank you in advance,

Hamse Ahmed Hussein

Hello.

1. Absolute Software makes their own subscription based product/service that allows tracking and protecting select laptops and desktops. HP Business laptops have had this feature since 2010 or so.

Using the feature should not be possible without enrolling the laptop into an Absolute.com provided tenancy.

2. There is no official way to go around the feature. If you think HP BIOS update somehow triggered the Persistence feature, then I would recommend contacting HP and asking if this is a widespread or even a known problem and ask for instructions to fix it.

I have never seen or heard of Persistence activate itself automatically. Re-flashing the BIOS, removing battery or doing any reset combination will not help.

3. If the laptop was, in fact, enrolled in Absolute service, then the Absolute portal is also the only way to also disable it. Otherwise the only course of action is to replace the system board - a rather expensive part.
