HP ProBook 440 G3 Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)

Hello HP Support,

I have an HP laptop that is currently BIOS locked. When I try to enter the BIOS or system diagnostics, I am asked for a password that I do not remember. After several attempts, the system tells me to press the power button to continue.

I need to access the BIOS settings

Kindly assist me with unlocking the BIOS or provide instructions on how to reset it. I am the rightful owner of this laptop.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome to HP Support Community, @ricky127

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you have forgotten the BIOS password on your HP laptop, you can follow the steps below to reset it. Note: Steps may vary slightly depending on the specific model. Proceed carefully to avoid hardware damage.

1. Power Off the Laptop

Shut down the operating system completely.

Turn off the laptop.

Disconnect the charger from the power outlet and the laptop.

2. Drain Residual Power

With the charger unplugged, press and hold the Power button for 10–15 seconds to discharge any remaining electrical power.

3. Open the Laptop

Carefully remove the laptop’s access panel or bottom cover.

Ensure you follow proper static safety (use an anti-static wrist strap if available).

4. Locate the Password Reset Jumper

Find the password reset jumper on the motherboard.

It is usually green in color and should have a label such as:

CLR_PWD

PWD

JCMOS

PSWD

5. Reset the Jumper

Remove the jumper from its default position (usually pins 1–2).

Place it on one pin only (to avoid losing it) or according to HP’s documentation for your model.

Wait 5–10 seconds.

6. Reassemble the Laptop

Put back the access panel/bottom cover.

Reconnect the charger and any external devices.

7. Power On the Laptop

Turn on the laptop.

The BIOS password should now be reset, granting you access to the BIOS setup.

8. Reconfigure BIOS Settings

Enter the BIOS menu.

Re-enter any custom settings (boot order, virtualization, TPM, etc.).

Set a new password only if needed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
