HP notebook Model #14-an012nr

Hello,

This notebook was my daughters. I tried a system reset and halfway through screen stated reset could not be completed. Did not say why. It directed me to press F2 to return to windows. Windows did not start, only HP logo, then blue screen, then black, then continued to repeat these screens but no startup. If I turn off computer and turn back on it will only repeat these three screens. It sounds like it’s doing a good startup. No beeps. My son tried to troubleshoot and notebook started an automatic repair, which ended with couldn’t repair your PC. Log file: C:\windows\system32\logfiles\srt\srttrail.txt. I chose shut down. When I restart I get 0xc000021a error. Attempts repair again, then to did not start correctly, it attempts to diagnose, and back to pc did not start correctly. Wow, I hope this makes sense to someone out there!

Hi:

The only suggestion I can offer, would be to try reinstalling W10.

If you don't have W10 recovery media, you can make your own by using the Media Creation Tool at the link below.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You can make a W10 USB flash drive installer using an 8 GB flash drive.

W10 will work with the product key in the BIOS, install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

Then you can install the drivers and available software from the notebook's support page.

I haven’t tried your suggestion yet. I may have been a little quick to hit that accept as solution button, being a newbie here. But it sounds like solid advice to me! I had a flash drive on hand, and will try today. Thank you so much for links and advice! I have never encountered a situation where a purchased pc did not come with recovery and reinstalling software. Always a learning curve somewhere in life! Wish me luck!

You're very welcome.

Nowadays with W10 being free to reinstall using the method I posted, a lot of PC manufactuers no longer supply recovery media.

I read that during this year, HP quit providing the option to create recovery media when you first get the PC up and running.

I used to get bugged by the constant reminder to create the set of recovery media, if I was not quick enough to do it right away.

So, it seems like we are left with the reset option but if that doesn't work, or you have to replace the hard drive, then you have to use the clean install route.

Hopefully, it will be smooth sailing for you.

Hmmmm.... I was nocking around the idea of purchasing a pc laptop, I have been Mac user for about 8 yrs, now I’m wondering how much grief this could cause. I was loyal Dell fan for many years. First pc purchase when replacing my clone in the early 90’s. I am disappointed with hardware reliability and marketing strategies of Apple. Back then Dell’s lasted forever, just didn’t like vulnerability of software. I guess I’ve been out of the loop way to long!

I got started with buying Dell PC's when my company used them and I liked them too.

Then they switched to HP, and I have liked all the HP PC's and notebooks I have bought over the years.

I only buy the business models (as I did with Dell), and they have never let me down.

People swear by Apple products, but I have never joined the wave.

It is more about having to learn new operating systems and whatnot.

I have only recently gotten familiar with Android tablets.

What and where is product key in bios? I am in bios now.

You don't need to go into the BIOS, and you can't read the product key.

It is not visible in the BIOS.

W10 will automatically find the key and install.

You should try to determine whether the hard drive is failing or not.

I suspect it is.

Re-installing Windows 10 on a failing hard drive is pointless.

Hi, @ieee488

I recommended this approach first for two reasons...

1.  There was no hard drive failure code presented.

2.  The notebook has an eMMC drive, which means it can't be replaced unless the entire motherboard is replaced, and doing that would not be worth the labor or money to fix.

So I say, why not give it a try.   There is absolutely nothing to lose except a little time.
