HP Notebook - 15-dy0013dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have an older HP Laptop.  I use a pin number to get into my computer and Microsoft Windows 10.  All of a sudden (I think after an update of some kind) it automatically doesn't recognize my pin.  It automatically starts out with two wrong digits before I even get a chance to enter my pin,

When I finally get a chance to enter my code, I have to enter their code-- A1B2C3.  Only, then do I get to enter my Pin, which then works just fine.  How do I correct, the 'incorrect" login procedure?

I do get a notice sometimes that states a problem has occurred and reinstalling ffmpeg.dll might help.  Not sure what this means.

Hi @DV1917,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering a login issue with your HP laptop after a Windows update, which is causing your pin to be misrecognized initially. Additionally, the ffmpeg.dll error suggests that a multimedia library or codec might be malfunctioning, though it’s less likely to be directly related to your login issue.

Here are steps you can take to address both problems.

Fix the Incorrect Login Behavior (PIN Issue)

The issue where your PIN isn't recognized right away, and you see a different input prompt, could be due to several factors, including problems with the credential manager or system settings. Follow these steps:

a. Reset Windows Hello PIN:

  • Step 1: Open Settings (Windows Key + I).
  • Step 2: Go to Accounts > Sign-in options.
  • Step 3: Under PIN (Windows Hello), click on Remove and follow the instructions to remove the PIN.
  • Step 4: After the PIN is removed, restart your computer and go back to the same settings page to add a new PIN.

b. Reset the Sign-in Options:

Sometimes, resetting the password or updating sign-in preferences can help.

  • Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  • Check if Windows Hello PIN is set correctly, or if other options like Password or Picture Password need to be configured.

c. Check for Updates:

It could be that the recent update caused some corruption.

  • Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.
  • If updates are available, install them, and restart your computer.

d. Perform a System Restore:

If the issue started after a recent update, performing a system restore to a point before the update might fix it.

  • Type "System Restore" in the search bar, and choose Create a restore point.
  • In the System Properties window, go to System Restore and follow the prompts to restore your system to an earlier date.

Fix the ffmpeg.dll Error

This error usually appears if there's a problem with multimedia software or media files being used by some applications. While it’s unrelated to the login process, here’s how to address it.

a. Reinstall or Update Applications Using ffmpeg:

If you use any media players or applications that rely on ffmpeg (such as VLC or video editing tools), reinstall them. This should restore the missing or corrupted DLL files.

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program, and find the application that's likely causing the issue (e.g., VLC).
  • Uninstall it and then reinstall the latest version from the official website.

b. Manually Download the DLL File:

If the above method doesn’t work, you can manually download and install the missing ffmpeg.dll file from a trusted source, but be cautious of downloading DLL files from unofficial sites due to security risks.

c. Run the System File Checker (SFC):

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click the Start button, select Command Prompt (Admin)).
  • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  • This will scan and attempt to fix corrupted system files, which may resolve the DLL error.

By following these steps, you should be able to address the PIN login issue and resolve the ffmpeg.dll error.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
