How do you restore files (.swm) from a backup to their original location and not in a system recovery file folder?Reso

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you want to restore .swm files from the backup.

Follow the below steps to back up the files.

  1. Open the USB device to which you wrote your backup file, such as your USB flash drive, and then copy the MINWINPC folder to a convenient location on your computer, such as your desktop.

  2. Locate and open the MINWINPC folder on your computer, and then double-click the executable file (.exe) that was created during the backup process.

       NOTE:

There may be more than one file, but only one will be an application (.exe) file. Other backup files created with HP Recovery Manager will have an .fbw extension.

  3. When the Recovery Manager File Restore Program opens, click Next.

  4. Select the types of files that you want to restore and then click Next.

  5. A message displays showing the location to which the files be restored: C:\System Recovery Files. A shortcut to this file location is also created on your desktop.

  6. Allow the program to restore the backed up files.

       NOTE:

The progress bar may stay on “0% complete” for 10-30 minutes, and the entire restore process can take several hours.

  7. After the HP Recovery Manager restores the files, you can double-click the Shortcut to System Recovery files on your desktop to view the restored files.

Let me know how it goes.

My files are all there but I don't remember the location for certain file folders.  I was hoping the recovery would have put everything back where it started in the C: drive and I could get rid of the shortcut.

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate your time and effort.

If the standard procedure of locating the program launcher (a .exe file) on the first backup media (disk 1 or the external storage device) is not working, then you can manually extract the files using 7-zip.

7-zip can be found here.

(The above link is 3rd party and is not owned by HP, I've posted this only so that I may help you resolve this issue by going beyond my support boundaries, please ignore the ads and take only the free suggestions)

Once 7-zip is installed, open it and navigate to the first .swm file of the backup.  Right-click the .swm file and select 7-zip>open archive.  Once that opens, it should reveal the contents of the .swm files.  If the file contains something you want to keep, you can either extract each individual file or extract the entire directory.  If you want to extract each individual file, highlight the desired file and click the extract button at the top.

Let me know if that helps.
