Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hello, I have just done a Factory reset Win 8 - then updated back to Win 8.1. I have used HP Recovery Manager to restore all the files I backed up using the same. File were restored or loaded to my PC to C\System Recovery File.  I thought I had only backed up personal files such as Docs, pictures, pdfs etc. When I review the  Folders/Directories located here C\System Recovery File there are Program Files and Windows etc Folders with files in them as well showing the path as:

C:\System Recovery Files\2016-11-28 110441\C

Can I delete these Folders in this path without worry...my concern is that there is a 2nd "C" showing up in the path and I am concerned that perhaps this 2nd "C" is pointing back to my original folders in my C Drive for the Program F iles on my laptop.

I would rather ask the question on this one than just try it (delete them) and see. Thanks for your support.

Yes, you can delete the unwanted files from the recovery restore folder and it will not affect the programs installed on your computer.

Thanks so much for your answer to my query. I can now proceed with confidence to delete all the unnecessary Program & Windows files in C/System Recovery Files directory.

Hello again, I have since gone into the System Recovery File to go forward and delete Program/Windows Files and folders to located in

C:\System Recovery Files\2016-11-28 110441\C\Program Files

and when I hit delete on the following folders I get a pop up message " Need Administator permission to delete this folder" so I click on the shield icon/continue

The I receive this message "You require permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this folder"

This is happening for these folders in the above included path:

Reference Assemblies, Windows Media Player, Windows NT, Common Files & Internet Explorer.

How can I continue to delete these folders/files from my laptop that are not required as per your advise above. Thanks so much.

Hi @Cannuck_2016-

Thanks for the reply

TrustedInstaller is a built-in user account in Windows. This user account “owns” a variety of system files, including some files in your Program Files folder, your Windows folder, and even the Windows.old folder that is created after you upgrade from one version of Windows to another. To rename or delete these files, you’ll have to take ownership of them away from the TrustedInstaller user account.

Use the below steps to grant permission to everyone.

  1. Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer
  2. Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu
  3. Click on Security tab
  4. Click on “Advance”
  5. Now click on Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for User windows
  6. Click on Edit Button and select user from given Change Owner to list if user or group is not in given list then, click on other users or groups. Enter name of user/group and click ok.
  7. Now select User/group and click apply and ok. (Check “Replace owner on sub containers and objects” if you have files and folder within selected folder)
  8. Click ok when Windows Security Prompt is displayed
  9. Now Owner name must have changed.
  10. Now click Ok to exit from Properties windows
  11. Once you have taken the ownership of file or folder

Grant Permissions to everyone-

  1. Go to C: and then click right click on the folder and choose properties.
  2. Then go to security tab and click Edit then click Add => Advanced.
  3. If you click on advanced now, click on Find Now and choose everyone and click Ok.
  4. Then again click Ok and now click on Allow => Full control => Ok.

Now you should be able to delete the files without any issue.

Keep me posted and I hope you have a good day ahead.

Take care.

Cheers!
