Hello @Dickie-07,
Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome onboard.
What makes you think you have HDD issues - could you provide details ?
May be it is stuck because the error is irrecovable. How about checking the HDD using the HP BIOS/UEFI diagnostics ?
Please, turn off your computer. Start it again by using the power-on button and
as soon as you do it, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) - you will enter HP startup menu similar to this one:
Choose/Press F2 and follow the on-screen instructions to perform System test >>> QUICK test. More information can be found here
>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259
>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1
It should check these components:
Battery check
Processor check
System board check
Hard drive SMART check
Hard drive short DST check
Memory quick check
You may also perform Component test for detailed HDD test.
Let me know the results of the test.

I asked you to run this test because there might be some issue with it as running Check Disk usually runs smoothly if there are no issues. Did it give you any error message/code eventually ?

There should be some error code for details to my knowledge but anyways... as the HP diagnostics says, it's recommended that you get a replacement to avoid data loss. This is a clear indication HDD is failing.
Your options:
1) If your computer is still under warranty, please contact HP Support and inform them about the BIOS/UEFI hardware diagnostics. They will work with you about the way to replace the faulty component. Contact HP:
>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp
2) If your computer is with warranty period expired, you should replace the failing HDD - buy it on your own. There are variety of options - vendors you can choose from. You can get it online or from PC retail store.
You can also consider installing SSD instead of HDD - this is strongly recommended as SSDs are way faster, more repliable and lighter. More info on SSDs:
>> http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404258,00.asp
How to replace the faulty HDD with new HDD or new SSD: please, find info and instruction in your computer's manual or watch YouTube videos examples. If you do not want to do this on your own, please bring the computer (or ship it) to HP Authorized Service Center where the technicians will do this for you. If you are not sure where such a center is located, check these or contact HP for assistance in finding the nearest one for you:
>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00372730
>> http://www8.hp.com/us/en/store-finder/find.do?bs=SR4&type=authorized
3) Last part - once you replace the faulty component - you will need to reinstall back your operating system - Windows or another. So,
3.1 ) IF your computer originally came with Windows preinstalled by HP (a.k.a. OEM Windows), then you need to use HP recovery media - DVDs or USB pen drive you have previously created or recovery media purchased from HP.
3.2) IF your computer did not originally come with Windows preinstalled but you later installed operating system on your own, you need to use the OS / Windows installation media and install Windows on your own.
If your computer can boot to Windows now, you can copy personal data on external media and you can create recovery media. If you need assistance about that, just post back and I'll provide details.

Sorry for the late response - it's morning where I am now. The above recommendations apply - when you have a chance you should consider replacing the HDD and create a back-up a.s.a.p to avoid data loss.
