HP EliteBook 745 G5
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP EliteBook 745 G5 is still under warranty, it uses an AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 2700u from Q1 2019, it supports TPM 2.0, yet the Windows 11 upgrade tool tells me that the 2700u CPU doesn't support Windows 11.  Yet the desktop Ryzen 2700 supports Windows 11.

 

HP should work with Microsoft to fix whatever string mismatch is causing the upgrade tool not to work...  surely the mobile version would work if the desktop version does.

EB 745 G5 is not (yet) listed as compatible with Windows 11 on this website >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4300937-4295746-16

 

If you want to upgrade to Windows 11 now, there are ways to do it. They are described here >> https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/ways-to-install-windows-11-e0edbbfb-cfc5-4011-868b-2ce77...

 

Be aware that the device may not be 100% compatible (yet) to run Windows 11 and you install it on your risk.

 

 

HP is working hard on its own and with partners like Microsoft/Intel/AMD/etc to bring most out of the situation and bring as many options as possible. Not all models will be compatible with Windows 11 but if yours is, it might take some time until all systems are verified and drivers/apps released.

Hi,

Considering that these computers are only a couple of years old it would have been expected that they would be compatible for an upgrade such as this. It's a little disappointing that HP has not ensured that their product has not met the minimum standards via all of their suppliers. This is fairly poor quality control and is totally the responsibility of HP to make it right. Please don't expect customers to put their computers at risk by telling them to install Windows 11 on a machine that does not meet the requirements of the upgrade unless you are prepared to replace any that fail.

 

Your support and full assistance with these computers would be greatly appreciated by your customers.

Windows 11 was brought to the table just a few months ago.
If a computer was released 3-4 years ago when Microsoft's strategy for OS was completely different, when the primary OS was Windows 10 and when nobody back then knew there would be newer Windows (e.g. W11), then I think it may sometimes not be possible to make a device compatible with the new OS now, especially when it comes to concrete hardware requirements which are set by a different party (not by HP). Sometimes it is possible, sometimes not.
Note that Windows 10 will be supported by 2025 and there is nothing wrong in using it.

I am personally SHOCKED to learn that your HP laptop, a model that is STILL being sold by HP (apparently) does not run Windows 11!!

 

I was told on this same forum, only  a few weeks ago, that every PC HP currently sells would run Windows 11.  I personally did not believe such a rampant over-generalization, but what do I know?

 

That said, the issue is mis-stated by the MS evangelists who buy completely into MS's point of view on Windows 11.  It is not an issue of what Windows 11 NEEDS in order to work; instead, it is entirely an issue of what MS WANTS in order to install Windows 11 on your PC.  Unfortunately, we regular folks have no influence at all on these arbitrary decisions by MS; we have to live with them.

 

There are way around these limitation, and some here on the forums mistakenly (IMHO) advise folks to use those to force Windows 11 onto "incompatible" hardware -- but I advise against it because it's only a matter of time until MS grows tired of folks doing this and pushed out a Security Update that disables all those PCs.

 

Sorry, it is what it is -- and MS could not care less about those of us left out in the cold.

HP Press Release 

" HP Inc. has announced its currently shipping portfolio of Windows-based PCs1 are expected to be upgradeable to Windows 11" - 6/24/21

 

I have not verified that any 1st gen Ryzen CPUs were still shipping at the time of that press release, one will likely have to dig through archive.org for that.

 

The AMD forums did clarify why the desktop versions were supported, but the mobile versions were not, apparently the desktop versions are significantly different in that they are Ryzen gen 1+ and not just Ryzen gen 1.  However, given the primary reason for exclusion from Windows 11 upgrades appears to be lack of TPM 2.0 support, it is still quite odd that 1st gen is excluded since HP advertises TPM 2.0 support with the Elitebook 745 G5 

"TPM 2.0 embedded security chip"
