I have a 14-da0012dx that's using a 256 gb Sandisk ultra plus sd card. The card was formatted to exfat then a few movies were stored on it. Every once in a while when  I go into "my files"  the card will show up but it will say that there's "nothing to see here" and when I try and eject the card it will say that it's "busy" and I should wait for it to finish. If I reboot then the files will show up again and everything is fine.

I took this problem to the Geek Squad and their recommendation was to exchange the chromebook which I did. I had the same problem.  I exchanged the sd card for another and that did not help either.

Should I format to fat32? Use a smaller, 128gb card? I have a Sandisk 128gb extreme plus card but I don't want to try it unless there's a chance it will work.

I have activated the individual app permisions and activated the preferences toggle under storage management.

Thanks for the help

The default formatting for cards up to 2GB is FAT16. In recent years, memory cards have gained more storage capacity; 4GB and above. The file format FAT32 is now commonly used in memory cards between 4GB and 32GB.

The below table gives you the details of different file formats:

Going by this table, the best file system to use would be FAT 32. In FAT 32 file system, a file size which is more than 4GB cannot fit in. The maximum file size should be 4 GB. However, you can multiple files of 4GB each in FAT32 file system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for the reply. I tried FAT32 and it didn't help. The information would show up on the SD card and then after a period of time, wouldn't show up at all with a "nothing to see hear" message when I tried to access the card. Also, when I try and reformat the card when the "nothing to see hear" message is displayed, I get a message saying that the card is busy and that I should wait until it's done. A reboot brought the information back.

After doing some other reading on the chrome os forum I read that this problem might be associated with the computer entering sleep mode. After going to sleep, the information on the card would not show up in the card. I went into settings and turned off sleep mode both as a default and "when the lid is shut". This seemed to solve the problem. My SD card has remained readable.

Is there another solution to this? I'm old school and shut things off when I'm done but it would be nice if sleep mode was available with and SD card inserted.

Is this a common problem? I did read in one place that this is a known problem and that it should be reported. Is a fix possible with an upcoming update?

Thanks again for your time.  Scott

I powerwashed the chrome book and then reformated the Sandisk Ultra Plus 256gb card to FAT32 again just to make sure we were starting completely fresh.  I place a word document and a short Netflix movie on the card.  The computer has been turned off and on and has gone into sleep mode multiple times over the last two days and the information on the card has remained readable. I think the problem might be solved!

I would like to wait a few more days to see if everything is working right in all scenarios and if everything checks out I'll come back and confirm that everything is OK.

Thanks for your time and Merry Christmas!
