Hello, I have a problem with my brand new HP laptop

When I close my laptop it sometimes does no go into sleep mode, when I open it a few hours later the battery is empty.

My old HP laptop (same one from 2024) never had that problem.

The settings for closing my PC are set to 'sleep mode'.

I did all the possible updates I could do, HP updates, Bios updates, firmware updates, etc. also all possible Intel Core updates.

I have a HP15.6 inch laptop with a Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 5 125H (3.60 GHz) and 24 GB RAM

What is the possible cause of the sleeping mode problem?

(could it be Google Chrome that kills the battery in sleep mode?)

Thanks

Hi @Parcifal,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is when your brand‑new HP laptop drains its battery because it does not actually enter sleep when you close the lid. Your screenshot clearly shows the battery dropping slowly as if the laptop stayed awake in the background.

Let’s go through this together and get your laptop sleeping normally again.

Step 1: Disable “Stay connected to network during sleep”

This is the #1 reason for battery drain in Modern Standby.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Go to System → Power → Screen and Sleep
  3. Look for “When my device is asleep, stay connected to Wi‑Fi”
  4. Set it to Never

This forces true deep sleep instead of “sleep but still online.”

Step 2: Change Chrome’s background behavior

Chrome can run tasks even when closed.

  1. Open Chrome
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Click System
  4. Turn OFF
“Continue running background apps when Chrome is closed.”

Step 3: Turn off USB or Bluetooth wake-ups

Some wireless mice or dongles wake the laptop immediately after the lid closes.

  1. Go to Device Manager
  2. Expand Bluetooth and Keyboards
  3. Right‑click each entry → Properties
  4. Under Power Management, uncheck:
“Allow this device to wake the computer.”

Step 4: Run HP’s Sleep Mode Diagnostics

HP Support Assistant has a built‑in check for Modern Standby issues.

  1. Open HP Support Assistant
  2. Go to Troubleshooting Tools
  3. Select Power and Sleep
  4. Run the recommended fixes

Step 5: Check Windows “powercfg” wake causes

This shows what wakes the laptop.

  1. Open Command Prompt
  2. Run: powercfg /sleepstudy
  3. Then run: powercfg /lastwake

If you’d like, share the results, and I’ll interpret them for you.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
