Probook 640 G2
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I want to update the Bios of a Probook 640 G2, Win 7 Pro 64.

On the HP site there is a download, for v01.02

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=8430732&swItemId=ob_163103_1&swEnvOid=405...

Downloaded the SP74154 file, ran it, when asked restarted the laptop: the result I got after starting up:

"The system could not find one of the BIOS Update binary files. Please make sure the correct BIN file

is located on the system hard drive or on removable USB Key under the "Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New" folder

or under the "EFI\HP\BIOS\New" folder. It may also be placed under the "Hewlett_Packard\BIOS\Previous" folder

or under the "EFI\HP\BIOS\Previous" folder.

[OK]

Even if I made the folders and put in the .bin files, ran the SP74514 file again, I got the same message and the BIOS is not updated.

Would gladly have it because we have issues with wifi not working after we undock it and take it to a conference room.

So anybody has a solution???

Thx!

OK,

Can you manually create a folders   EFI\HP\BIOS\New

on the flash drive, then paste N87_0102.bin there

E.g.  E:\EFI\HP\BIOS\New\N87_0102.bin

Then, reboot, enter F10 to update the BIOS and see if it will work ?

Can you also reboot the computer, keep press F1 for System Information. Once it opens, please copy/paste all the information here, especially product number, motherboars info and ROM version or something similar - whatever is there...

Looking forward to your reply.

Hello!

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

Thank you for posting.

Could you elaborate for me when exactly you get this message - during PC start-up before Windows is loaded OR after Windows is loaded ?

There are multiple ways to update the BIOS - try with other methods:

Use HP Support Assistant to download updates for this HP computer including BIOS/UEFI updates as mentioned in the product's manual.  Here is how to use HPSA:

Try the other option to update the existing BIOS from within the existing BIOS/UEFI:

Let me know if this works.

Hi IT_WinSec

The message comes after a restart, before Windows (Pro 64 US) starts.

--

I have already used HPSA, checked for updates and messages: The only updates it shows are: HP Universal Camera Driver 2015, Cyberlink YouCam Software SP74037 and Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver and Utility SP73093.

No mentioning of a Bios update.

--

I tried the video you mentioned, http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00042629#AbT1

Downloading the SP74154.exe file, and installing it on the E:HP_Tools in the folder "Hewlett_Packard\BIOS\New".

I saw that there was now a N76_0102.bin file in that directory.

After the install a window "HP BIOS update and recovery" asked me to update the BIOS. I checked the first option (update) and the last windows said:

"The BIOS update was prepared succesfully.

Please restart this device to complete the update

Pressed "Restart"

Again no Bios update:

"The system could not find one of the BIOS Update binary files. Please make sure the correct BIN file

is located on the system hard drive or on removable USB Key under the "Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New" folder

or under the "EFI\HP\BIOS\New" folder. It may also be placed under the "Hewlett_Packard\BIOS\Previous" folder

or under the "EFI\HP\BIOS\Previous" folder.

[OK]

I did the same writing the .bin files to a USB stick:

(Choose second option Create Recovery USB flash drive)

Restarted Laptop

Pressed Esc, Entered Startup menu, choose F10 (Bios Setup), Update System Bios, Update Bios Using Local Media:

Again no Bios update:

"The system could not find one of the BIOS Update binary files. Please make sure the correct BIN file

is located on the system hard drive or on removable USB Key under the "Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New" folder

or under the "EFI\HP\BIOS\New" folder. It may also be placed under the "Hewlett_Packard\BIOS\Previous" folder

or under the "EFI\HP\BIOS\Previous" folder.

[OK]

Laptop restarted,

Pressed Esc, Entered Startup menu, choose F10 (Bios setup), Update System Bios, Check HP.com for BIOS updates

MS Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption (BDE) may be enabled on your system.

HP requires that BDE be suspended temporarily before the BIOS is flashed and

that you obtain your BDE recovery password or recovery PIN before suspending BDE.

After the BIOS is update, BDE can be resumed

[Continue]

(no BDE on this laptop..., so continue)

Current bios version 1.00

Configuring network...

Downloading file bios catalog

(yes it starts...!)

But...

failed during data transfer (the resource referenced in the url does not exist)

So....

HPSA failed (no Bios in list),

On the HP website for the 640 G2:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=8430732&swLangOid=8&swEnvOid=4059

Choose Bios:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=8430732&swItemId=ob_163103_1&swEnvOid=405...

Installing SP74154.exe failed,

BIOS update from the BIOS to HP.com failed (yes, there was a network connection),

(though you can manually add a path to the downloadable .bin files... but where can I find them??)

BIOS update from the BIOS on local media failed....

Last resort: HP Softpaq Manager:  It recommend a critical update for the Bios: SP74154...

[OK]

So now I am out of options....

Yes!! This worked for me!

I made the directory on my USB stick,

Put it in the USB port,

Restarted the laptop,

Pressed Esc --> F10 (entered the BIOS) --> Choose "Update System Bios"  --> Choose "Update BIOS using local media"

Then the immediate reaction of the laptop was, that it did find a new Bios!

I installed it, the laptop restarted... and then... the laptop started beeping 1 long two short beeps...

It scared the s..t out of me, but after a cold reset, it started again without problem. And a new Bios!

Thx IT_WinSec, you made my day!

worked for me too, but not with the EFI\HP\BIOS\New folder.  So I created all the folders that are described in the error message : EFI\HP\BIOS\Previous, Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New, and Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\Previous. An dthen it worked. Thanks for this ! it was helpfull

I am having the same exact issue with my HP Zook 15 G3 Notebook. I have tried the exact steps given in this post , but I still getting error :

"The system could not find one of the BIOS Update binary files. Please make sure the correct BIN file

is located on the system hard drive or on removable USB Key under the "Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\New" folder

or under the "EFI\HP\BIOS\New" folder. It may also be placed under the "Hewlett_Packard\BIOS\Previous" folder

or under the "EFI\HP\BIOS\Previous" folder."

I've put it on a thumb drive, I've put it on a system drive, but still get the error. When I select the option to boot from local device, I get that error as well. There have been two new BIOS releases since my current version.

Please help.

I'm going to be honest. i worked on this for about 3 hours today. What finally fixed it for me was I took a USB drive and created these folders

EFI/HP/BIOS/New

EFI/HP/BIOS/Previous

Hewlett-Packard/BIOS/New

and I pasted the exe file along with what was extracted from the exe in all these folder and the root of the USB drive and it finally took.

Don't know if that will help or not.

HP Recommended

In my case I had to remove encryption (bitlocker) from the D:\ drive, which stores the HP_Tools and all the folders related to the BIOS update. Once the BIOS was updated successfully, I encrypted the drive again.
