HP Pavilion - 14-ce0507na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all

I wonder if someone  can help

I have been trying to upgrade my sons HP Pavilion laptop with a crucial technoloy M2 nvme ssd ( https://uk.crucial.com/ssd/p2/ct500p2ssd8/CT17233218# )

HP Pavilion - 14-ce0507na

Product

4AZ85EA

Serial

[personal info removed]

Crucial's website says that this nvme ssd is compatible with his laptop and I've had untold problems trying to get the device to recognise the ssd-  i double checked that the new ssd was compatible before buying it (so i believed it was)

when  i used the HP PC Hardware diagnostic UEFI disk check - it says that no disks are recognised.

We cloned his 150gb proprietary (rebranded samsung) nvme m2 ssd to a 2tb SATA for backup, but using the windows 10 install media i am unable to install win10
because the latop refuses to recognise the new nvme ssd.

we also have an issue with his default nvme m2 ssd because it refuses to boot cleanly into w10 and I can't fix it either way [ using the win10 usb )

i've trid the following.

- booting off the windows 10 usb media and installing to the new nvme 2 in a USB/Nvme m2 USB adapter, but you can't install windows this way onto a usb target disk

- booting windows10 off usb with the default hp nvme m2 ssd to try and fix the boot problem - no joy

- i bought an nvm3 m2 <>usb adaptor and the crucial disk is visbile on his laptop and my mac & gaming PC (w10) so i know the device(s) are good.

What i'd really like to do is a fresh install onto the new crucial ssd but the laptop doesnt see that and I was expecting to see the new ssd but can't find anything in the BIOS to detect the new disk.

I've wasted two days on this and am stumped.. Can anyone help?

thanks in advance

daniel

Hi:

The M.2 slot in the notebooks with the Intel Pentium processors only support SATA M.2 SSD's, not NMVe.

If you exchange the NVMe SSD for a SATA one, it should work just fine.

It is unfortunate that HP does not indicate that information in the service manual.

This model M.2 SATA SSD provides the best performance for the price, IMHO.

There is the older version:

And the new version that recently came out:

WD Blue SA510 500GB M.2 SATA SSD with up to 560MB/s read speed : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessori...

The specs appear to be the same.

Thank you Paul for posting. DOH! I had come to the conclusion that I'd bought the wrong SSD before posting yesterday. I realised that the NVME and SATA SSD's look different  and thought perhaps the compatibility was an issue. Your post confirmed that. Hey ho.

I've the WD Sata ssd on order and will hopefully be able to move on from this issue. Thanks for the help

You're very welcome, Dan.

It's really not your fault.

I assumed that you wanted to not only have more storage but also upgrade from a SATA SSD to a NVMe SSD, which would have been about 5x faster that a SATA SSD.

If you look at the drive info in Chapter 1 of the service manual, you would have assumed that a NVMe SSD would have worked just fine, based on the information provided.

But the non-existing exclusion in the manual should have indicated that NVMe SSD's are only supported in the notebooks that come with the Intel core processors.

Cheers,

Paul
