Hallo
is there anyway i can unlock the BIOS Advance settings in HP OMEN Gaming Laptop 17-db0xxx ??
I just bought a new NVME.2 SSD Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB for an upgrade.
The SSD is shown in Device Manager but i don't see any NVME driver, which leads to the SSD not showing in the Disk-Manager.

Hi @DennWhyNot,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Unlocking advanced BIOS settings in HP laptops, including the OMEN Gaming Laptop 17, is generally not officially supported, as HP locks these settings to prevent unintentional damage or instability. However, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot your SSD issue and possibly work around BIOS limitations.
Steps to Ensure the SSD is Recognized:
Verify Physical Installation:
- Ensure the Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD is securely connected in the correct M.2 slot.
Update BIOS and Drivers:
- Check for the latest BIOS update from the HP support site for your laptop model.
- Install the latest Samsung NVMe driver from their official website (Samsung Magician software).
Check Device Manager:
- If the SSD appears in Device Manager, it may require initializing in Disk Management:
- Press Win + X > Disk Management.
- If the SSD does not show up, it might need a driver.
Manually Install the NVMe Driver:
- Install Samsung's NVMe driver if it's missing.
- Check under Storage controllers or Disk drives in Device Manager for any unrecognized or disabled devices.
Enable NVMe Support in BIOS:
- Even though advanced settings in BIOS are locked, ensure:
- The M.2 slot is enabled in the BIOS.
- The drive is set to AHCI mode rather than RAID.
Initialize SSD in Disk Management:
- Once recognized, the SSD might need to be initialized:
- Right-click This PC > Manage > Disk Management.
- Look for a new unallocated drive, right-click, and select Initialize Disk.
- Choose GPT if your system uses UEFI.
If the SSD Still Doesn't Appear:
- Use Samsung Diagnostic Tools:
- Run the Samsung Magician software to check SSD health and firmware updates.
- Test the SSD:
- Check the SSD in another compatible system to verify that the issue is not with the SSD itself.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Alden4
thankyou for your reply.
- The drive is set to AHCI mode rather than RAIDa
as i mentioned, there is no option to enable NVME Support in BIOS, hence i need to access the advance settings.
my BIOS is already on the latest version which is F.10
and i can not install manually the NVME drive manually since somehow there's an error message " it's not connected ".
I saw a video, where the problem is solved, by changing the AHCI mode to RAID, but i can not access anything except from Security and Boot option in my BIOS.
The SSD is detected in my Device Manager but it's not shown in Disk Management.
The SSD is also not shown In the Samsung Magician Software.
Here are some pictures.
The Empty Storage is only a USB Mass Storage, i assume it's because i also plugged in the EVO 970 through external housing (FE202x Series in Samsung App).

Hi @DennWhyNot,
Thank you for your response,
It seems like your Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD is physically installed but not fully recognized due to a configuration or compatibility issue. Let’s refine the steps to tackle this.
Verify Hardware Compatibility:
- Confirm that your laptop's M.2 slot supports NVMe SSDs and not just SATA-based M.2 drives.
- Cross-check the SSD's specifications with your laptop's user manual or HP support documentation.
Device Manager Confirmation:
- Open Device Manager and look for the SSD under "Disk Drives" or "Storage Controllers."
- If listed, right-click the SSD > Properties > Volumes Tab > Populate to see if it has partitions.
- If not, proceed to initialization in Disk Management.
Check Disk Management:
- If the SSD is detected but not initialized:
- Press Win + X > Disk Management.
- Look for the SSD as "Unallocated."
- Right-click > Initialize Disk and choose GPT for modern UEFI systems.
Test SSD Using External Housing:
- Since you have connected the SSD externally:
- Check if it is recognized as a mass storage device.
- Use Samsung Magician or similar diagnostic tools to confirm the drive's functionality.
Switch AHCI/RAID Modes:
- If your BIOS doesn’t provide access to switch between AHCI and RAID:
- Consider resetting the BIOS to default settings.
- Try enabling UEFI and disabling legacy boot (if available).
Attempt Driver Installation:
- Install Samsung's NVMe driver manually:
- Download from Samsung’s website.
- If it fails, the driver might not recognize the SSD until initialization or BIOS configuration is resolved.

BIOS Workarounds:
- While unlocking advanced BIOS settings is unsupported, you could attempt the following:
- BIOS Reset: Perform a CMOS reset by removing the battery or using the BIOS reset option (if available).
- Third-party Tools: Some tools or key combinations (e.g., Ctrl + F10 or Shift + F2) might unlock hidden BIOS settings, but these methods are risky and not recommended.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Update the SSD firmware via Samsung Magician on another system where it is recognized.
Testing on Another System:
- Connect the SSD to another compatible system:
- If the SSD works, the issue lies with your laptop's configuration.
- If it fails, it could be a defective drive.
Try an Alternate M.2 Slot:
- If your laptop has multiple M.2 slots, test the SSD in another slot to rule out slot-specific issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

the EVO 990 SSD is found by the system itself, after i switch the slots too.
as i mentioned, that i have EVO 970 SSD that is connected through external housing.
i tried the EVO 990 SSD in that housing and the EVO 970 SSD in the M.2 Slots, i can use the EVO 990 SSD as external harddrive like the EVO 970, but when i tried to install the NVME Driver from Samsung, but it mentioned again, that the device is not connected, and the EVO 970 is not showing either in the Disk Management
in the BIOS i tried Ctrl+F10 , Shift+F2, F10+a, etc. it doesn't show me the Advance BIOS setting.
i reseted the BIOS aswell.
Also the EVO SSD is not shown in the Boot option as well eventhough it's detected by the HP Diagnostic tool, i forgot to take picture there.
Any other way to solve this problem?
