HP 17-by3063st laptop, 10th gen. I3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently bought this laptop; I chose it because the 17" models were the only ones still featuring a DVD/CD optical drive.

One of the features I wanted to experience is the SSD (solid state drive).

I surprised to find that this drive is the BOOT and Recovery drive, and that it is a TLC (shorter lifetime than SLC).

The laptop has a dual drive configuration, 128-GB SSD and 1 TB HDD.

Being a techie since 1998 (MS-MCSE) and wanting a robust system, I look to replace the boot SSD with a larger SSD.

?

1. Can I put a 256 GB PCIe ssd in? The PDF manual says this:

<<256 GB, PCIe, solid-state drive + 1 TB, 5400 rpm hard drive;(7th or 8th gen)>>

2. In the 17-by3063st, is the ssd SLOT an "M" or "B+M" ??

...

I want the drive holding the boot and OS partitions to be larger to hold programs, otherwise performance suffers.

Device Manager should tell you what it is now. The specs only shows it has 1 drive. 128GB could be a bonus for promotion.

A1. The limit size (capacity) for M.2 slot  is huge but due to physical limit you normally can buy 2TB or 4TB (from some vendors). That means you can put more than 256GB. Manual only says values of pre built options.

A2. As mentioned above, now you know what it is then go out to buy a similar drive with larger capacity. Crucial says it is compatible with M.2 NVMe SSD. For example (for capacity, you can buy smaller or larger);

Banhien,

Thanks for the feed-back.

I heard of SSDs needing replacement, again and again. Researching I find the SS-drive my HP 17by3063 uses is a TLC.

The specs (i.e., reviews) of this drive (TLC) is 1000 writes (per block) before failure.

It seemed that HP used an "entry-level" SSD for product release; I understand the nature of this kind of release and was prepared to upgrade. I am comfortable with opening up my laptop and upgrading the drives and the memory.

(Using 40% for capacity and 60% for planning on Drive space management).

And just to be clear, using a 250 GB, or 500 GB  SSD <<PCIe M.2 2280>>  would work in a dual drive config with a 1-TB HDD.

Two further questions:

1. what is the TBW (endurance) and DWPD for these drives (PCIe M.2 2280)?

2. Is the SSD drive connector for HP 17by3063 an M or B+M connector?

The Manual part number for 256 BG (256 GB, PCIe, NVMe L22583-001) shows it to be an M-connector

WHILE the drive ID (part no. in DM "SSSTC cv8-8e128-HP") show a B+M connector type.

It doesn't show a dual-drive config for anything larger than 256 GB.

I just want clarity and to prevent sending something ordered BACK.

Thanks in advance.
