Hi @Otisw,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP notebook is stuck on the Wi-Fi setup screen during first-time Windows setup and won’t let you access the desktop, Task Manager, or use the Windows key, here are a few steps you can try to bypass or resolve it:

Option 1: Use Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt

This works during Windows setup:

        1. Press Shift + F10. This should open a Command Prompt window.

        2. Type the following command to launch Task Manager: taskmgr

If Task Manager opens, you can try ending the setup process or launching explorer.exe.

        3. Alternatively, type: control netconnections

This opens the network settings window, where you can manually connect to Wi-Fi or disable the network adapter to bypass the screen.

Option 2: Disable Internet to Skip Setup

If the setup is forcing you to connect to Wi-Fi:

  1. Turn off your router temporarily or disconnect the Ethernet cable.
  2. Restart the laptop.
  3. Windows setup should now offer a “I don’t have internet” option.
  4. Proceed with offline setup and create a local account.

Option 3: BIOS Restore:

  1. Shut down the computer, keep the charger plugged in
  2. Hold down the Windows and B buttons together while the computer is still turned off.
  3. Turn on the computer and continue to hold the Windows and B buttons until a BIOS Recovery screen appears.

Follow the on-screen instructions and click on OK.

Option 4: Use Safe Mode or Recovery

If the above doesn’t work:

  1. Force shut down the laptop by holding the power button.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press F11 or Esc + F11 to enter Recovery Mode.
  3. Choose Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. Press 4 to boot into Safe Mode.
  5. From Safe Mode, you may be able to bypass setup or reset the PC.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
