HP Spectre x360 - 13-ap0002no
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought a Spectre x360 a few months back with the intension of using it for coding, lots of commandline use, terminal etc...

But the backslash key does not work!!

On the physical keyboard the backslash is located on the second key the left of the backspacekey. On the key backslash is maked in the lower right corner. Typically this means that ALT-GR must be held to use it.
On the key is question mark(Upper left), a plus sign(Center of the key) and the backslash(Lower right.).

However the combinations give me this result (With Danish Keyboard selected in Windows.):

SHIFT + key = a Question mark

key alone = a plus sign

ALT-GR + key = a plus sign.

alt+key = nothing happens

I have tried every other combination of keys on the entire keyboard. Backslash is nowhere to be found.

With Danish selected as keyboard language all other keys match their physical layout.

With a UK keyboard layout I can get the backslash on some other key, and the physical layout does not match at all.

How do I get it working? I need backslash or this machine is pretty much useless.

Thanks for trying to help Sandytechy20, but I finally managed to figure it out myself.

I looked into creating my own custom keymap, downloaded the Microsoft tool and everything. One thing this tool can do is to analyse a keymap and look for errors. One is missing keys... However, there were no missing keys in the original HP Danish Keymap... so the backslash must exist.  And it does!

Just to the right of ALT GR, on a key marked with <, > and | it is hidden!

Press ALT GR and this key... and you get the backslash.  \\\\\\\   🙂

On my machine theres even a very hard to see backslash in very faint blue on the physical keyboard. It does not light up with the keyboard light, and I have to turn on quite a bit of room light to be able to see it.
I must have missed it earlier when I tried pressing every single key on the keyboard. Probably because pressing ALT GR and this key is quite awkward .

Welcome to HP support community.

I suggest to change the keyboard layout to his preferred language

and check if that works:

  1. In Windows, search for and open Typing settings.

  2. On the Devices window, select Typing, and then select Advanced keyboard settings.

    Selecting Advanced keyboard settings

  3. On the Advanced keyboard settings window, select the language you want from the drop-down menu under Override default input method.

Selecting a language to use with the keyboard

  4. To change the keyboard layout, search for and open Language settings.

  5. On the Time & Language window, select a language, and then select Options.

Selecting Options to change the keyboard layout

  6. Under Keyboards, click Add a keyboard, and then select a keyboard layout from the list.

Clicking Add a keyboard to select a keyboard layout

  7. To switch between keyboard layouts, press the Windows  + SPACE BAR keys.

    NOTE:

Switching between keyboards only changes the language of the input. To change the display language for apps, settings, menus, and other areas in Windows, see the Changing the display language section in this document.

  8. If you would like each app to utilize a specific keyboard, search for and open Advanced keyboard settings.

  9. Under Switching input methods, select Let me use a different input method for each app window.

Selecting the option to allow each app to use a specific keyboard

The keyboard is already set up as I want.

Danish keyboard, just as it is supposed to be for this machine.

The problem is that when this is set, there is no way, what so ever, to type a backslash using the physical keyboard.

I find it hard to belive that I would need to change layout to american every time I need to type a backslash. Especially since the american layout fits the physical images on the keys terribly. For example I can type a backslash but I need to press the key with a * on it, do to it. Paranthesis' and most other special characters are on keys that do not match the physical layout.
