@Sally1781, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It seems like you are experiencing a black screen issue while your computer continues to run in the background. This could be caused by several factors. Here's what you can try to resolve the issue:

Check Connections:

  • Ensure your monitor cables (HDMI, VGA, etc.) are securely connected to both the monitor and the computer.

Restart Your Computer:

  • Perform a restart to see if the issue persists. Sometimes, a simple reboot can resolve temporary glitches.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Ensure your graphics card drivers are up to date. You can do this by visiting the manufacturer’s website or using a driver update tool.

Check Display Settings:

  • Make sure your computer's display settings are not set to an unsupported resolution or refresh rate that your monitor cannot handle.

Test with Another Monitor:

  • If possible, connect your computer to a different monitor to see if the problem lies with your current monitor.

Check Power Settings:

  • Make sure the computer is not set to go into sleep mode quickly due to power settings.

Safe Mode:

  • Boot your computer in Safe Mode to see if the issue occurs there. Safe Mode loads with minimal drivers, which can help identify driver-related issues.

Hardware Check:

  • If you're comfortable, check if components like your RAM or graphics card are properly seated inside your computer.

Task Manager Check (if visible):

  • If you can, try accessing Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see if it's a specific application causing the issue.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
