Hi @Breffers,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There could be a few possible reasons for your HP laptop screen suddenly going dark, then gradually getting darker. Here are some things you can try to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check if the laptop is plugged in: If the laptop is not plugged in or if the battery is low, it may cause the screen to go dark.
  • Adjust the screen brightness: It is possible that the screen brightness was accidentally turned down or that the laptop's power-saving settings are dimming the screen to conserve energy. Try adjusting the screen brightness by pressing the appropriate function key or going into the display settings.
  • Check the graphics driver: Sometimes an outdated or corrupted graphics driver can cause issues with the display. Try updating the graphics driver from the manufacturer's website or reinstalling the current driver.
  • Connect to an external display: If the laptop still doesn't display anything on the screen, try connecting it to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable. If the external display works, it may indicate a problem with the laptop's LCD screen or the cable connecting it to the motherboard.
  • Reset the laptop: If none of the above steps work, try resetting the laptop by removing the battery and power cable, holding down the power button for 30 seconds, and then reconnecting the battery and power cable.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
