Hi I just bought a new HP laptop, I am trying to set it up and got to the 3rd step to connect to my network but I think I changed the keyboard layout language as the keyboard returns different letters.

I need to go back a step and change the keyboard layout language to US.

Hi do I go back a step.

I have tried shift F10 and typed control but the same thing happened, wrong letters come up and I get the error message.

Help.

@Ugo52,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

No worries -we’ll get your keyboard layout sorted so you can continue setting up your new HP laptop. Here’s how to fix it:

Method 1: Change the Keyboard Layout During Setup

  1. Look for the Keyboard Icon on the Setup Screen:

    • On the Wi-Fi setup screen, there’s often a keyboard icon in the bottom-right corner. Click it to select US or your desired layout.
  2. Shortcut to Change Keyboard Layout:

    • Press Windows Key + Spacebar (or Shift + Alt) to toggle between available keyboard layouts.
    • If US is listed, select it and try typing again.

Method 2: Restart the Setup

If the keyboard layout can’t be fixed directly:

  1. Force a Restart: Hold the power button until the laptop powers off.
  2. Start Over: When you turn the laptop back on, the setup will begin again. Pay close attention to the keyboard layout selection step (it’s typically right after choosing the region). Select US to avoid mismatched letters.

If It Still Doesn’t Work:

  • Double-check that no special characters (e.g., @ or #) are being misinterpreted.
  • You can always complete setup without connecting to Wi-Fi. After setup, go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region to adjust the keyboard layout.

Let us know if these steps resolve the issue! 😊

Kind Regards,
