Short DST: Failed 9C04QX - 0008A4 - MFGK61 - 60UU03 error code mean ?

Dear All,

My hard disk is super slow (copying 500 MB file with 120 Kb/s speed in over 1 hour span to usb stick and Windows is not starting up appr. 45 min.

Therefore I followed the intructions in HP support forums and perform boot up diagnostics tests.

After hard drive check, I received the failure code below.

SMART Check: PASSED

Short DST: FAILED

Failure ID: 9C04QX - 0008A4 - MFGK61 - 60UU03

Hard Disk 1

I can not understand the failure id to take any further action.

I can of course proceed with format and then repair the partion but I real want to rescue the existing files first. And with this HD Speed it is not just possible.

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number (p/n) of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.

The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP.

Continued use of Windows may speed up the failure of the hard drive. It may be in your best interest to boot the computer from a Linux Live CD. This will allow you to boot the computer and copy your files to a USB stick.
