In December of 2020, I bought an HP laptop. I really liked it. It performed well and I treated it very well. And now, 4 years later, almost to the day, the hard drive on that laptop failed. So, I ask you....what should the "expected" lifetime of a laptop be? I would suggest more than 4 years. They're not getting any cheaper. The HP I replaced it with was almost $800 with tax. I'm not wealthy.

Hi @RMDF,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I'm sorry to hear about your laptop's hard drive failure, especially since you took good care of it and were happy with its performance. It's understandably frustrating, and I hope we can help you resolve this or recover your data. Here are a few questions to better understand your situation:
- Are you experiencing any specific error messages or symptoms (e.g., clicking sounds, "no boot device found") that indicate the hard drive failure?
- Have you tried accessing the hard drive using an external device or recovery tool to retrieve your data?
- Did you notice any signs of reduced performance or unusual behavior from the laptop before the hard drive failure?
Let's try these steps.
Check BIOS for Hard Drive Detection:
- Restart your laptop and press F10 to access the BIOS.
- Look under "Storage" or "Boot Options" to see if the hard drive is recognized. If it is not detected, the hard drive may need replacement.
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:
- Press F2 during startup to access HP Diagnostics and run the Hard Drive Test.
- This will confirm the status of your hard drive and indicate if a replacement is necessary.
Attempt Data Recovery:
- Remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer using a SATA-to-USB adapter or external enclosure.
- Use recovery software like Recuva or EaseUS Data Recovery to attempt to retrieve any important files.
Consider Replacing the Drive with an SSD:
- If the hard drive is beyond repair, consider replacing it with a Solid State Drive (SSD). SSDs are faster, more reliable, and typically have a longer lifespan than traditional hard drives.
Restore or Reinstall Windows:
- If you replace the drive, you can reinstall Windows using a bootable USB created from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.
- Use your existing Windows product key, as it’s usually tied to your laptop's motherboard.
If your hard drive truly has failed after four years, it's worth noting that while laptop components typically last 3-5 years, longevity can vary depending on usage, storage conditions, and the type of drive.
