Hi @H-P1_,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message "Boot Device Not Found. Please Install an Operating System on your hard disk" typically indicates that your computer is unable to locate the operating system needed to boot up. This can happen due to various reasons such as a corrupt boot sector, a disconnected or failed hard drive, or incorrect BIOS settings. Here are the steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve this issue:
Basic Troubleshooting Steps
Check BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing a key like F2, F10, Delete, or Esc during startup (the specific key depends on your computer manufacturer).
- In the BIOS/UEFI menu, navigate to the Boot tab and ensure that your hard drive is listed and is the first boot device.
- If the hard drive is not listed, it might indicate a hardware issue or a loose connection.
Check Physical Connections:
- If you're comfortable opening your PC case or laptop, check that the hard drive is properly connected. Ensure that the SATA/IDE cable and power cable are securely connected to the drive and the motherboard.
Advanced Troubleshooting
Use a Windows Installation Media:
- Create a bootable USB drive with Windows installation media using the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft on another computer.
- Insert the bootable USB drive into your computer and restart it. Enter the BIOS/UEFI settings to change the boot order so that the USB drive is the first boot device.
- Boot from the USB drive and select "Repair your computer" at the Windows Setup screen.
Run Startup Repair:
- After selecting "Repair your computer," go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to let Windows attempt to repair the startup issues.
Use Command Prompt to Fix Boot Issues:
In the Advanced options menu, select "Command Prompt."
Type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:
These commands will attempt to repair the master boot record, fix any boot issues, scan for installed Windows installations, and rebuild the boot configuration data.
Check Disk for Errors:
While in Command Prompt, you can also run a disk check to look for and fix any errors on your hard drive. Type the following command and press Enter:
Replace C: with the appropriate drive letter if your system drive is different.
Potential Recovery Steps
System Restore:
- If you have a system restore point, you can try restoring your system to a previous state. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore and follow the prompts.
Reinstall Windows:
- If all else fails and you have backups of your important data, you may need to reinstall Windows. Boot from the Windows installation media and follow the prompts to perform a clean installation of Windows.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
