Hello
I bought my Spectre end of 2017. Out of warranty of course.
A few weeks ago it started a strange behavior: I would always reboot about 3 seconds after a shutdown made in windows 10 has been completed. The same if I set it into hibernation or sleep - it would always reboot.
The only way I can keep it from rebooting is when I press the power button at the beginning of the reboot for about 5 seconds.
I saw the same issue in this community from several customers in 2018,
What I tried.
- checked the power settings in windows
- disabled fast start
- installed the latest BIOS from HP support page
- reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch
- diisconnected RTC battery for about 5 minutes.
No success by now.
Is there any other way getting this solved?

@nicecap Welcome to HP Forums Community!
here's what you need to do, start with a hard reset as per HP standards: Click here for details.
If Windows suddenly restarts without warning, or restarts when you try to shut it down, it might be caused by one of several issues. Windows could be set to restart automatically when certain system errors occur. A BIOS update can also resolve the issue. Use the information in this document to resolve issues with the computer restarting unexpectedly.
If the computer restarts unexpectedly and then does not start to Windows, see one of the following documents for steps to resolve this issue:
-
HP Guided Solution - No Power or No Boot Troubleshooting for notebook or desktop computers.
-
Computer Does Not Start (Windows) for notebook computers.
FOR DETAILS & FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS, USE THIS LINK: CLICK HERE
(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)
Also, have you attempted to capture any error message that appears before or after the device restarts?
Did you try updating the BIOS to resolve the issue? (If not, please click here to find and install it)
Let me know how that pans out,

Hi Riddle_Decipher.
Thanks for reply.
However, I think you misunderstood the problem. It's NOT that the laptop would restart SUDDENLY while using it.
The problem is: when I shutdown the laptop intentionally it would shut down - so far so good - but then, after 2 seconds it will power up again into Windows as if I had chosen a restart.
This of-couse will drain the battery each time not on grid power.
I tried eveything I could find on the net:
- disable fast start
- set the power options to no restart after error
- edited diverse registry entries
- update BIOS.
- reinstall windows 10 from scratch
- removed the CMOS battery for 5 minutes.
There are several post to this problem here on HP community forum. I've read of customers who got their main board swapped by HP.
What can I do? For me this was a pretty expensive purchase and as it will not really shut down I more or less cannot use this laptop as a laptop - it will run out of battery before I even can use it mobile.
Please help.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.
Press ‘Win + I’ shortcut keys to open Windows Settings app.
Click on ‘Update & Security’, then go to the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left-side menu.
Scroll downwards a bit and click on the ‘Power’ option.
Click on ‘Run the Troubleshooter’. It will start detecting the problems and if it founds, go ahead fixing it.
If you continue facing the issue, then follow the below steps.
On your keyboard, press ‘Windows key + R’ and type ‘Powercfg.cpl’ in it.
Hit the ‘Enter’ key to open power options in the control panel.
From the left-hand side, click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’.
Then, click on the link ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.
From the bottom given power button options, uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup’ option.
Click on ‘Save changes’ button.
If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accept as Solution. Your feedback counts!
Cheers!

Thanks Fossette - both steps did not fix it.
I unchecked Turn on fast startup before.
When I got to the 'Settings that are currently unavailable' I did not even have a 'Fast startup' option anymore to turn off.

Please try testing the hardware -
1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
3. On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
4. Click Extensive Test.

@nicecap The best way forward is to reset windows considering the hardware tests have passed, and that's a good thing it did, as that confirms this isn't a hardware malfunction,
I suggest you use the steps from this link to resolve this issue: click here for details

Hi and thanks.
I already installed Windows 10 from scratch - the problem was the same afterwards.
Since I used my laptop for more than a year without any problems, is it possible that it's a BIOS issue after making a BIOS update?
