I have the same issue with my specter x360. Mine is a customized one. Just received it and after setting it up it is running hot now. I have not run any heavy-duty tasks such as video games, video rendering, or anything of that nature. I paid 2000 for this to do some heavy tasks. I am really concerned now because it is getting hot with minimal CPU usage (10%-20%). I wonder what would happen if run tasks that raise the CPU usage to above 80%? Everything is good with this model, except the overheating issue which is very disappointing.

HP contacted me and said it shouldn't happen and to return it. All the settings were correct and bios up to date. Try using it a few more days and see if it gets better - if not - hate to say it return it. Before buying anything else, read up on all laptops. Many experience the same thing. Btw, the batt life is not what it is advertised either.

3MS, mine did improve after heat sink was replaced. It was still hotter than what i thought was normal but felt it was going to catch fire.  Probably dropped 20°C, even 30.

So suggest try that first if still under warranty. And dont forget your statutory warranty rights either if it is just out of warranty.  These days a $2000 laptop should be fault free for longer than 12 months and confident consumer protection agencies would have similar view.

Further research, after being told not to overcharge battery, suggests that is correct, and would apply to any computer. Tedious to have to disconnect charger manually, rather than a battery management system dealing with it. But this would likely affect heat as well.

Also suggest downloading a heat tracking ap. The one i have shows what max temp is overtime as well as current, in both cores and cpu loads.

Also, as much as hate to say it, have seen suggestions for a cooling pad and this might be appropriate in your case if loading up on cpu use.

As i have said, HP were not relyctant to address the issue with an on site tech visiting twice with no debate about it. I dis have to debate the battery replacement more than i expected but in the end it is being replaced. So I have no complaints.

As you allude to, I think it s an excellent bit of kit and worth persevering with.

Run the replace one in the store before you take it?

PS, I m in Australia. Maybe HP support here is more helpful. I have no complaints about that.

After all, HP support are mere mortals, and are prob hell bent on solving our problems as that is why they do this job, love solving problems.

As long as they listen to what actual problem is, follow the steps suggested, exhaust the possibilities and a solution should be found.  Our "normal" might not be "design normal" though.

If you pick through this forum you will find realistic and appropriate steps to take, rather than ditching your new laptop. Some suggestions are not realistic imo though.

I have purchased this machine in the last couple of weeks and it overheated today. I could not use for over a half hour!

VLS12, I suggest download https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

I found this useful.

See my comments above.

Not sure if I posted here, but you should not overcharge your battery.  Yes, you would think there would be battery monitoring system that automatically regulated this.  But that is not the case.

The thin, all alloy case of this laptop is in effect a heatsink and is used to dissipate heat.

Obviously, I trust, do not have the ventilation underneath obstructed.

If you have followed all the hints and suggestions here and elsewhere, then request the heat paste be replaced and if that is ineffective haethe heatsink itself looked at and replaced.  This improved my situation quite a lot.

Heat is a battery killer.

I suggest you flag this to customer service now in writing incase you need it later.  And monitor your battery performance.

Mine would drop 100% to 80 % as soon as I unplugged charger, and would drop to less than 70% overnot when turned off, shut down completely.

Despite HP initial protest that this was still a good battery, I eventually had my battery replaced under warranty, 2 years after purchase, my claim being that the heat probably caused premature failure.

Good luck

I have the same overheating problem.  Is there a solution that works other than replacing the machine?

my machine is overheating. Other than getting it replaced are there other remedies?

Unfortunately not. It's a shame really. I have an Acer and Surface. Both do not heat up nor does the fan constantly run. Here is my use cases for over heating and fan.

1) docked using a Dell 6000C hub with dual monitors. Running web mail, and MS PPT. Fan constantly runs and overheats

2) un-docked but plugged into electrical and running web and MS Office PPT - fan constantly runs and over heats

3) un-plugged in running web and sometimes MS Office. Fan runs less but battery drops fast from 100% to 80% within half hour. The battery drain is fast even with brightness turned down to optimize.

The battery life is not what is advertised.
