I know this is an old problem. But, I had same from day 1. Initially HP sent out a tech who added more heat paste. And when this didn't achieve anything he changed the the heat sink itself. THis seemed to drop the temperature a few degrees.
My issue now is the battery seems to be performing badly, evven for one that is a few years old.
It loses about 25% of power from 100% when turned off completely and unplugged from charger, over a period of about 7 hours. It drops 20% of charge from 100% when unplug charger with the machine on.
There is numerous expert opinion on web about the affect that heat has on the long term performance of lithium batteries.
My problem is, that while HP were trying to solve the issue earlier on, the usual suggestions seen on this thread, and between the two tech visits, it was running very hot and did shut down at least once. Perhaps this has harmed the battery to point now it wont hold charge properly.
HP say it is a consumable item and not covered by the extended warranty I paid for; yet am sure I was told at time battery was covered.
Anyone else have similar experience with drop in performance of battery?

Interesting solution. I knew I paid out to get the biggest, bestest, fastest CPU I could... so I could wind it back to equivalent of a cheaper lesser one to overcome a heating issue, that now has become a battery issue.
[Am revisiting this page now that my battery is suffering, not able to hold charge, a symptom of being used in high heat environment]

Thanks KP. However, I was able to convince Support that if a new battery lasts over 7 hours [that is what they told me] then my battery that only lasts 2.5 hours is not still "good" as they claimed. 1/3 of good, being a new battery is NOT GOOD. After some discussion about that contradiction I understand my battery is going to be replaced as a one off.
During the course of that discussion, for the first time I was told that I should unplug charger when battery is 100% otherwise battery damage would ensue. If this is true, it should be written on a brick and beaten into new customers, figuratively speaking. IF i did this I would be starting my day with less than 80% charge which is not ideal for a device that is supposed to portable and supposed to be a tablet as well as a laptop.
Anyway, I am relatively happy or will be when battery is replaced.
