Thanks - this solved the issue on my system. Updated BIOS without any problem after using this workaround.

Looks like something that HP will need to address on future BIOS updates.

I am on a Spectre x360 15t and BIOS ver F.21. HP Support Assistant found a BIOS update and failed on the installation and now reports no updates available.

I pulled the SoftPak from HP's site:

-- look for your computer model

-- Support and Drivers

-- click Go

-- scroll down and open BIOS

-- click Details

-- click Full Details at the bottom of the window that lists the update file

-- click Associated Files and read the Release Notes

-- click Download up above in the update file window to download the SoftPak to your computer

Now it's easy to reach.

I, too, am experiencing the Shutdown = Restart problem. I'm hoping the new BIOS update includes a patch.

The shutdown causing restart problem I moved to another thread. The end result was actually a faulty piece of hardware on the motherboard itself. I had to send the laptop to HP where they replaced the entire motherboard and another piece of hardware (been a few months, don't have the paperwork with me at the moment).

If you are running into this problem and have tried to resolve it by yourself to no avail then I would suggest getting with HP because it is probably hardware related.

Just to go through a few things I did before calling HP

  • Updated all drivers
  • Updated all firmware including latest version of BIOS
  • Used Windows Recovery to recover the initial install of Windows
  • Fully wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Windows from scratch
  • Ran every hardware diagnostic available on the laptop itself in the BIOS (All came back normal and functioning but obviously it was wrong).
  • Also did several Windows Settings tweaks thinking it could of been an error at shutdown causing restart or thinking the laptop was seeing shutdown as a power outage and would turn itself back on. Neither solved the problem.

Again, if you have that issue I would save yourself the headache and just call HP. Their techs will force you to reinstall Windows anyway so you might as well save yourself the headache and do it on their terms so you don't have to do it 3 or 4 times like I did.

Thanks for the advice. I've already been through restore and refresh cycle and my last hope is the new BIOS version. If that doesn't work then I'll start down the road with tech support.

I was working with a guy on tenforums.com and he suggested booting up KNOPPIX from a USB drive and see if it would shut down. If it did then that would point to Windows if it didn't then that could mean something else. Unfortunately, it shutdown and restarted. My first thought was hardware (eek!) but then I found the BIOS update.

Maybe I'll get lucky.

No luck. The F.30A update went smoothly but it does not correct the shutdown = restart problem. *sigh*

Sorry to hear it didn't fix the problem. I know how frusterating it is to deal with! Especially for the first month you don't realize it is happening and you just keep coming back to a dead laptop!

I did find the paper that HP sent back to me with the laptop. The repair details state "Parts replaced: MB, Thermal Paste, SW" and "Repair Actions SWAP, RE-DL"

Not sure but maybe that information will help direct HP Support to a quicker resolution knowing another laptop went through the same process. Also, upon getting your laptop back make sure you inspect the laptop well. I noticed a few extra nicks and scratches on mine (it was literally a month old and never left my office before going to HP). I didn't raise a fuss with HP since the marks aren't extemely noticeable but if they allow that to happen then other things could happen as well.

Mine is one month old, too. Ran perfectly for about two weeks then I started having trouble seeing my LAN printer (although no one else on the LAN has any problems) and then this Shutdown = Restart issue.

I'll be certain to reference this thread when I get with Support and will double-check the machine when it comes back.

Thanks for the assistance and for your posts.

HP Repair replaced the motherboard and it appears to be fixed.

I give them kudos for getting the unit back to me within 7 days and with no scratches or dings.
