Hi @Fmalo,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Boot device not found" error indicates that your computer is unable to locate the operating system on your hard drive. This could be due to various reasons, such as a disconnected or failed hard drive, corrupted boot files, or a misconfigured BIOS setting. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Check BIOS Settings
- Restart your computer and press the appropriate key (often F2, F10, ESC, or DEL) to enter the BIOS setup.
- In the BIOS menu, check if your hard drive is detected under the storage or boot options.
- Ensure the boot order is set to boot from the hard drive where your operating system is installed.
- Save any changes and exit the BIOS.
Run System Diagnostics
- Press the F2 key at the "Boot device not found" screen to enter the system diagnostics.
- Run a comprehensive test on the hard drive to check for any hardware issues.
- If the diagnostic test reports a failure, the hard drive may need to be replaced.
Check Physical Connections
- Power off your computer and unplug it.
- Open the computer case (if you are comfortable doing so) and check the connections to the hard drive. Ensure the cables are securely connected.
- If possible, reseat the hard drive by disconnecting and reconnecting it.
Repair Boot Files (Using Windows Installation Media)
- Create a Windows installation USB or DVD if you don't have one. You can download the Windows installation media creation tool from the Microsoft website.
- Insert the installation media into your computer and boot from it.
- Select your language preferences and click "Next," then choose "Repair your computer."
- Select "Troubleshoot" > "Advanced options" > "Command Prompt."
- In the Command Prompt, type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
- Close the Command Prompt and restart your computer.
Reinstall Operating System
If none of the above steps work, you may need to reinstall the operating system. Ensure you have a backup of your important data before proceeding with a reinstallation.
- Boot from the Windows installation media.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows on your hard drive.
Replace Hard Drive
If the diagnostics indicate a hard drive failure or the above steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
