Hi @Carl184

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m sorry you’re facing this right at the start with a brand‑new notebook. It must feel discouraging to power it on and immediately see a “Boot device not found” message, especially after checking the F2 diagnostics and noticing no hard drive detected.

Thank you for already looking into the diagnostics—that detail is very helpful.

Here are some steps you can try to isolate the issue:

Run Hardware Diagnostics Thoroughly

  • Power on the notebook and press F2 repeatedly.
  • Select System Tests > Extensive Test.
  • This will check storage, memory, and motherboard components. If the storage test fails or shows “Not detected,” note the result.

Check BIOS Settings

  • Restart and press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Under System Information, confirm if the internal SSD/HDD is listed.
  • If it’s missing, the system is not detecting the drive.
  • Press F9 to load BIOS defaults, then F10 to save and exit.

Reseat the Drive (if comfortable)

  • Power off the notebook completely.
  • If you are comfortable, check that the SSD/HDD is firmly seated in its slot.
  • A loose connection can cause the BIOS not to detect the drive.

Attempt Recovery Media Boot

  • If the drive is detected but no operating system is installed, you can reinstall Windows using recovery media.
  • Another Windows PC can create recovery media using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool:
HP Cloud Recovery Tool – Create Recovery USB

Confirm Drive Detection Again

  • After reseating or recovery attempts, go back into BIOS and check if the drive appears.
  • If it still does not show, the storage hardware may need replacement.

By running diagnostics, checking BIOS, and confirming drive detection, you’ll know whether the issue is with the operating system installation or the hardware itself. Since this is a new notebook, the expectation is that the drive should appear in BIOS and allow Windows setup to proceed.
