I just purchased a Pavillion 15.6 HD Laptop. Twice since I bought it for Christmas, the Laptop will go into an update mode and when it is finished, It will not let me log in and regardless of the Options I take to recover or fix the issue, they only way I can get the start up to work is doing a reset. What exactly could be creating this problem and how do I fix it for good.

Hi @mariacmetcalf19,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Experiencing issues with Windows updates and login errors on your HP Pavilion laptop can be frustrating, but there are several potential solutions you can try to address this problem. Here are some steps you can take.
Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that your system is up to date with the latest Windows updates. Sometimes, incomplete or failed updates can cause login issues. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates. Install any pending updates and restart your computer.
Windows Update Troubleshooter: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter to identify and fix issues with Windows Update. To do this:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Windows Update and follow the on-screen instructions.
Check for Driver Updates: Make sure all your device drivers are up to date, especially graphics and chipset drivers. Visit the HP support website for your laptop model, download the latest drivers, and install them.
Review Event Viewer: Use the Event Viewer to check for any error messages or warnings related to the update process. This can help identify specific issues. To access the Event Viewer, press Win + X and select "Event Viewer." Look under the "Windows Logs" section for relevant information.
System File Checker (SFC) and DISM: Run the System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Image Service and Management Tool (DISM) to scan and repair system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands:
sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Create a New User Account: Create a new user account and see if you can log in with that account. If successful, it might indicate that the issue is specific to your user profile. You can then try to fix your original user account or use the new one.
Check for Malware: Run a thorough antivirus scan to ensure your system is not infected with malware. Sometimes, malicious software can interfere with system processes, causing login issues.
Perform a System Restore: If the problem started after a specific update, you can use System Restore to revert your system to a point before the update. This will undo recent changes and may resolve the issue.
Reset PC with Keeping Files: If none of the above solutions work, you can try resetting your PC while keeping your files. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery, and under "Reset this PC," select "Get started" under "Keep my files."
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
