@William-70, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding start up issues!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand how frustrating it must be when your laptop isn't responding to key presses, especially when you're trying to access the BIOS or boot menu. No worries, let's troubleshoot this together!
First, could you let me know which HP laptop model you're using? That will help narrow things down. In the meantime, here are a few things you can try:
Check for External Devices
- If you have any USB devices (mouse, external keyboard, USB drives) plugged in, disconnect them and try again. Sometimes, peripherals can interfere with the boot process.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the laptop completely.
- Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if it's removable).
- Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter (but not the battery, if removable) and try turning it on.
Test with an External Keyboard
- If possible, connect a USB keyboard and check if it's responding. If it works, your laptop’s built-in keyboard might need troubleshooting or replacement.
Check for Stuck Keys
- Try pressing Caps Lock or Num Lock—does the indicator light turn on or off?
- Lightly tap all the keys to make sure none of them are stuck, as a jammed key can sometimes cause input issues.
Attempt an Automatic Repair
- If the keyboard still isn’t working, try shutting down the laptop.
- Turn it back on and immediately start tapping the F11 key repeatedly (before the HP logo appears).
- If this brings up the recovery options, follow the on-screen instructions for Startup Repair.
If none of these steps help, let me know what happens at each stage. Also, do you recall any updates, drops, or spills before this issue started? That could give us more clues.
Looking forward to your response! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!
