Wanted to restore laptop to factory settings but has stuck at 79% for 12 hours. See conflicting instructions on letting it run its course (not turning off) and manual power down. What is best way to proceed.

Hi,

Best way now would to manual power down by pressing Power button for 5 seconds.

Have you created HP Recovery USB after first setup of this notebook?

You can use this USB to factory reset.

The reason you're getting stuck up during recovery may be because Windows 10 must have upgraded its build to a newer one automatically previously, which might have corrupted recovery partition.
