Subject: Low Available RAM on New HP 15s Laptop (Only 1.7GB Free out of 8GB)

Message:

Dear HP Support Team,

I recently purchased a new HP 15s laptop on 24th June 2025, and I have noticed an issue with the RAM usage. The device has 8GB of installed RAM, but only 1.7GB is showing as available, even when no heavy applications are running.

Here are my laptop specifications:

  • Model: HP 15s

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 (12th Gen)

  • Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics

  • RAM: 8GB DDR4 (7.81GB usable)

  • Storage: 512GB SSD

  • System Type: 64-bit Windows 11

  • Device Name: LAPTOP-MZS03

This low available RAM is affecting my performance while running basic apps or games. I would like to understand:

  1. Why is so much RAM already being used in the background?

  2. Is this normal for this model, or is there a hardware/software issue?

  3. How can I maximize the available RAM for better performance?

Please guide me on how to resolve this issue or whether a replacement or upgrade is necessary.

Thank you,
Mohammad Zayir Shah

Hi @zayir,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding low available RAM!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Background Processes:

  • Open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc and navigate to the "Processes" tab. Check for any processes that are using a large amount of memory and end them if they are unnecessary.

Startup Programs:

  • Under the "Startup" tab in Task Manager, disable any programs that you don't need to start automatically when your laptop boots. This can free up memory.

Windows Updates:

  • Ensure your Windows 11 operating system is up to date. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

Adjust Virtual Memory:

  • Sometimes adjusting the virtual memory settings can help. Right-click on "This PC" > Properties > Advanced system settings > Performance Settings > Advanced tab > Virtual Memory. Check if the paging file size is appropriately set.

Check for Malware:

  • Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or any other reputable antivirus software to ensure no malware is consuming memory resources.

Intel Graphics Settings:

  • Integrated graphics can reserve a portion of your system RAM. Check the BIOS settings or Intel Graphics Command Center for memory allocation to graphics and adjust if possible.

BIOS Update:

  • Check HP's website for any available BIOS updates for your model which may address performance and memory management issues.

HP Support Assistant:

  • Use the HP Support Assistant to run diagnostics on your RAM to check for any hardware issues.

Reinstall or Refresh Windows:

  • As a last resort, consider refreshing or reinstalling Windows if there’s an underlying issue with the installation affecting RAM availability.

I hope this helps.
