Hi @Fred-17,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

Let’s go through this carefully so we can narrow down what’s causing it. Could you share a bit more detail after trying the following checks?

  • Device model: Which HP laptop or desktop are you using?
  •  Windows version: Are you running Windows 10 or 11, and is it fully updated?
  •  Error message details: When the black screen appears, does it show a specific error code or stop code before rebooting?
  •  Event Viewer logs: After reboot, open Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System and check for critical errors around the time of the crash.
  •  HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics: Restart and press F2 (or Esc → F2) to run HP’s System extensive test . Do CPU, memory, and disk all pass?
  • Driver updates: Use HP Support Assistant or Windows Update to confirm all drivers (especially graphics and chipset) are current, try via windows update too.
  •  External devices: Try disconnecting non‑essential peripherals (USB drives, dongles, etc.) to see if the crashes still occur.
  •  Overheating check: Does the device feel unusually hot before the reboot? Thermal shutdowns can cause black‑screen errors.

Once we know whether the error is tied to hardware, drivers, or overheating, we’ll have a clearer path forward.

I hope this helps.
