HP Laptop 15s-eq1xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear Community,

I have a new problem, which is however very old in internet, which is, task scheduler can not wake up computer in sleep mode.

So I am not a newbie, and I already made it work for all my other computers, except "HP Laptop 15s-eq1xxx", which has Win 10 Pro 64-bit installed. The steps I already tried:

   1. in the scheduled task mentions, "wakes the computer to run the task"

   2. in advanced settings of power options enable "allow wake timers" (btw, this option was invisible in the beginning, i enabled it by googling of some solution of editing windows registry)

   3. I disabled hibernate with "powercfg -h off"

   4. tried "run with highest privileges" and "run whether user is logged on or not"

   5. I looked into BIOS settings, and didn't find anything related

Would appreciate a lot if someone can share some tips.

Thanks,

David

I did a lot research, as well as contacting HP support for the problem. The following is ONLY my personal findings:

1. The issue is related to "Modern Standby" power feature with Win 10, which is mostly default for new laptops. The feature may have some advantages for mobile devices, but for computers definitely is a waste of power, hence not environmental friendly. Imagine if a person has 5 computers and uses them professionally, it is essential that the 5 computers function uniformly, e.g. sleeping and waking up to execute tasks, which is easy to maintain and saving power (and creating less fan noise if the computer is in sleeping room).

2. There is a trick however to restore old power state "S3", by editing windows registry starting from Win 10 version 20h2: reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0. For details please check the link: Getting back S3 sleep and disabling modern standby under Windows 10 >=2004 : Dell (reddit.com)

3. The aforementioned trick however may not work for "new" laptops, due to whatever reasons(e.g. BIOS support). I returned the laptop "HP Laptop 15s-eq1xxx" since the trick didn't work at all, and bought a new one "HP ProBook 440 G8". On ProBook the trick works partly, the system shows supporting power state "S3", and task scheduler is able to wake up the computer from sleep mode, however then the system halts with black screen (system still running, you can hear fans). I am hesitating if I should return the laptop again, as the ProBook supports at least waking up computer from BIOS. That might be a tolerable workaround

I bought 3 computers lately, all suffering the problem. The aforementioned trick worked on a Lenovo mini-pc, with some effort and luck. Obviously this issue is not "rare". I hope that the big vendors do a good study of the issue, being able to communicate to consumers clearly, saving a lot of time and money discussing, sending/returning products.
