Hi @JMCCONK,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message "The boot configuration data file doesn’t contain valid information for an operating system" usually indicates that the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) is corrupted or missing. Here are steps you can take to resolve this issue.
Using Windows Installation Media
If you have a Windows installation USB or DVD, you can use it to repair the BCD.
Insert the Windows installation media:
- Insert the Windows USB/DVD into your HP Notebook.
- Restart your computer and boot from the installation media. You may need to press a key (such as F9, F10, F11, or Esc) to access the boot menu.
Select your language preferences:
- Choose your language, time, and keyboard preferences, then click Next.
Repair your computer:
- Click on Repair your computer at the bottom left of the window.
Choose Troubleshoot:
- Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, and then Command Prompt.
Rebuilding the BCD
In the Command Prompt, type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each command:
Scan for Windows installations:
bootrec /scanos
- This will scan for Windows installations that are not currently in the BCD.
Repair the Master Boot Record (MBR):
bootrec /fixmbr
Write a new boot sector:
bootrec /fixboot
Rebuild the BCD:
bootrec /rebuildbcd
- If it finds any Windows installations, it will prompt you to add them to the BCD. Type Y and press Enter.

Checking and Repairing the File System
Sometimes, the file system itself may be corrupted. You can check and repair the file system using the following command in Command Prompt:
chkdsk C: /f /r
- Replace C: with the appropriate drive letter if your Windows installation is on a different drive.
Automatic Repair
If rebuilding the BCD does not work, you can try running the Automatic Repair tool:
Boot from the Windows installation media:
- Follow steps 1-3 above.
Run Automatic Repair:
- In the Advanced options menu, select Startup Repair.
Resetting BIOS Settings
Sometimes, resetting the BIOS settings to default can resolve boot issues.
Enter BIOS Setup:
- Restart your computer and press the appropriate key (usually F2, F10, F12, or Esc) to enter BIOS Setup.
Reset to Default Settings:
- Find an option to reset to default settings, save the changes, and exit the BIOS.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, you might need to consider reinstalling Windows. Make sure to back up your data if possible before proceeding with a reinstallation.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
