Following a reboot I get two messages saying "The configuration registry database is corrupt."

How do I fix these?

@Simon_Ford,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

The error message: "The configuration registry database is corrupt" typically indicates that part of Windows' system registry has been damaged. This can happen after a sudden power loss, interrupted update, or file system issue.

Let’s try the following steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Boot into Safe Mode:

  1. Hold down the Shift key and click Restart from the Windows login screen.

  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.

  3. Press F4 or 4 to boot into Safe Mode.

If the system boots successfully in Safe Mode:

  • Proceed to Step 2.

If not, try Step 5 to run Startup Repair.

Step 2: Run System File Checker (SFC):

  1. Right-click the Start menu and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).

  2. Type the following command:

    sfc /scannow
  3. Let it complete -may take a while.  This command will check and attempt to repair corrupted system files.

Step 3: Run DISM to Repair Windows Image:

Still in the command prompt, copy/paste/enter -and this may also take (quite) a while to complete:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Step 4: Perform a System Restore:

If the issue started recently:

  1. Press Win + R, type rstrui.exe, and press Enter.

  2. Choose a restore point prior to the issue.

Note: System Restore must be enabled previously to have restore points.

Step 5: Try Startup Repair (if Safe Mode doesn’t work):

  1. Turn on the PC and interrupt boot 2-3 times by holding the power button during startup until "Preparing Automatic Repair" appears.

  2. Choose Advanced Options > Troubleshoot > Startup Repair.

Step 6: Reset This PC (if other options fail):

If nothing works:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Recovery.

  2. Under Reset this PC, click Reset PC.

  3. Choose to keep your files (if desired) and follow the prompts.

Let me know how it goes -and whether the SFC or DISM scans found any integrity violations. If you’re still seeing the error, please also share whether it happens during startup or after logging in, and whether recent updates or power loss occurred.

Warm Regards,
