HP Pavilion - 15-cs3153cl

I've a HP Pavillion I5 laptop that does a short scream 😱 not longer after startup or waking.

It is audio, not fan related.  It's a fast: EEEeeeUuuuuu.  Lasts about that long.  Short of a second, but quite loud and at first, quite alarming.  I am getting used to it, but still would like it to operate like my HP450 laptop.

The Pav is all up to date for W11 & Intel drivers & Defender says it virus free.

Any ideas?

Thanx - Blob

Hi @Homer1952,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The short "scream" you're describing from your HP Pavilion laptop sounds unusual and potentially tied to system alerts, boot processes, or third-party software. Here are some steps and potential causes to investigate.

Check for System Sounds:

  • Sound Schemes:
    • Go to Control Panel > Sound > Sounds tab.
    • Under "Sound Scheme," ensure it's set to "Windows Default" or disable unnecessary sounds. Check if a specific program or event is playing the sound.

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Beep Code or POST Alert:
    • Some laptops emit sounds during startup if there’s a hardware alert. Check the BIOS/UEFI for any settings related to audio alerts or diagnostics.
    • To enter the BIOS, restart the laptop and press the key (usually F2, F10, or Del) during boot.

Third-Party Software or Drivers:

  • Startup Apps:
    • Open Task Manager > Startup and disable unnecessary apps one at a time to identify if one of them triggers the sound.
  • Driver-Linked Audio Feedback:
    • Update your audio drivers:
      • Go to Device Manager > Sound, video, and game controllers.
      • Right-click your audio device (e.g., Realtek, Intel) and select Update driver.

Hardware Diagnostics:

Built-In HP Diagnostics:

  • Turn off the laptop. Press the Power button and repeatedly press F2 or Esc to enter diagnostics mode. Run all tests, especially on audio hardware.

External Audio:

  • Plug in headphones or external speakers to see if the sound occurs there too. If it’s internal, it may indicate a hardware defect.

Environmental/Software Conflicts:

Background Apps/Processes:

  • Certain apps, such as media or streaming services, might briefly access audio output. Check for apps like Spotify, browsers, or communication tools in the background.

Test in Safe Mode:

  • Boot the laptop into Safe Mode (Settings > Recovery > Restart Now > Troubleshoot > Startup Settings > Safe Mode) to see if the sound persists without third-party apps.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,

Thank you for the comprehensive list of things to do.

I've done many of these already.  I have all sounds turned off including the start up.

However, I did see some Klipsch audio drivers in the Sound.... DevMngr folder & I removed those.

I'll see how this works for the next week.

Thanx - B
