The screen remains black after the sleep mode

After doing something on my computer, I close the lid while it's on and it goes to sleep. However, when I lift the lid again, the screen doesn't come back on; it stays black. Even if I press a button, it stays black. Holding down the power button to turn it off and then on again will bring the screen back on.
