Hi I am trying to sign into my hp laptop with my password linked to my Microsoft account however whenever I do this message appears. “The sign in method your are trying to use isn’t allowed. For more info, contact your administrator.” How do I find my administrator or could it possibly be the school that I go to that has control?

Hi @me_oopa,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out, and I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble signing in to your HP laptop.

Based on the error message: “The sign-in method you are trying to use isn’t allowed. For more info, contact your administrator.”

Your laptop is likely managed by an organization, such as your school. This type of restriction is usually set by an IT administrator through Microsoft Intune, Azure Active Directory, or Group Policy on school- or work-managed devices.

1. Check if the Device is Managed

  • On another device, go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  • See if the laptop is listed and whether it shows as “Managed by an organization.”

2. Try Logging in with a School Account

  • If you were given a school email address (e.g., yourname@school.edu), try logging in with that instead of your personal Microsoft account.

3. Contact Your School’s IT Department

  • If this is a school-issued laptop, they are the administrator.
  • Ask them:
    • If your account is allowed to sign in.
    • If they can remove the device from management (if it’s now personally owned).
    • If they can reset the login method or allow your Microsoft account.

4. Reset the Device (if allowed)

If the laptop is now yours and you want to remove all restrictions:

  • You can try a factory reset using a bootable USB with Windows 11.
  • However, if the device is enrolled in Autopilot or Intune, it will re-enroll itself after reset unless the admin removes it from the organization’s portal.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
