HP ProBook 450 G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,

Having difficulty creating a BIOS flash recovery drive using instructions here: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c02693833

We have a HP ProBook 450 G3 Notebook which is failing to boot.  Beep code is 2 slow, 2 short.  Error condition is: The main area (DXE) of BIOS has become corrupted, and there is no recovery binary image available.  Resolution: Perform BIOS recovery with external media (USB or CD-ROM). For information on how to restore the BIOS refer to the HP support document: HP Notebook PCs - Restoring the BIOS.  URL: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c02693833

We have downloaded the latest (and subsequently older) version of BIOS:

01.24 Rev.A 12.0 MB Feb 1, 2018

sp85184.exe

Upon execution, folder and files are created (C:\SWSETUP\SP85184) but executable fails with error: "HPBIOSUPDREC
The system BIOS update file is missing or corrupt. The system BIOS will not be updated.

Any ideas?

Something doesn't sound right.

To recap, you selected the option 'Create recovery USB' when you ran the sp exe file and had a USB stick inserted.

You then shut down the computer, had it on AC power,  the USB inserted,  held the WinKey+B down when you switched the computer back on and the BIOS update process started?

You need to have the Fast Boot option disabled in BIOS for this to work reliably.

People are using their precious remaining lifetime to try and help, so it is common courtesy to come back and tell what the solution eventually was even if you found it elsewhere. It is for the benefit of everyone.

To fix this, here is what I did;

go to this pc

go to c drive

go to SWSETUP folder

find the SP _ _ _ _ _ folder that pertains to the bios youre trying to install

then double click on the .exe that ends in 64
