Computer is giving me an error message:
There is an issue with Trusted Platform Module (TPM) data.
Press [Y] - reset whole TPM
Press [N} - Boot with current TPM data
Note: Bitlocker may require the recovery key to boot to Windows.

I AM NOT A TECHIE.  Does anyone have any idea what the heck this means?

Hi @azautisticadvoc,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Do you know if BitLocker encryption is enabled on this computer?
  • Is this a work/school device or a personal computer?
  • Did this message appear after a BIOS/firmware update, hardware change, or Windows update?
  • Are you able to get into Windows at all, or does this appear before Windows loads?
  • Do you have access to your BitLocker recovery key (for example, saved in your Microsoft account or provided by IT)?

Initial troubleshooting steps (safe approach)

Until we confirm BitLocker status, I recommend the following:

  1. Do NOT press Y yet
    • Resetting the TPM can trigger BitLocker recovery and lock you out if you don’t have the recovery key.
    • If unsure, pressing N (boot with current TPM data) is the safer option for now.
  2. Try booting with “N”
    • If Windows loads successfully, back up important data immediately.
    • Once in Windows, we can check TPM and BitLocker status safely.
  3. Check BitLocker status (if you can log in)
    • Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Device encryption / BitLocker
    • Confirm whether encryption is on and locate the recovery key.
  4. Locate your BitLocker recovery key

I hope this helps.
